All right, here’s today’s new disc reviews for all of you to enjoy...

Stephen has taken a look at Aleksandr Ptushko’s Ruslan and Ludmila (1972) on Blu-ray from Mosfilm via Deaf Crocodile and Vinegar Syndrome.

Dennis has reviewed William C. Reilly’s Men of Respect (1990) on Blu-ray from Columbia Pictures via Imprint Films.

And Tim has checked in with his thoughts on Nancy Walker’s Can’t Stop the Music (1980) in 4K Ultra HD from EMI via Kino Lorber Studio Classics!

Now then, we have a bunch of great announcement news for you today, so let’s get right into it...

For starters, Criterion has just announced their December release slate, which is set to include Wim Wenders’ Paris, Texas (1984) (Spine #501 – 4K + Blu-ray and Blu-ray) on 12/3, Joel and Ethan Coen’s No Country for Old Men (2007) (Spine #1243 – 4K + Blu-ray and Blu-ray) and Federico Fellini’s 8½ (1963) (Spine #140 – 4K + Blu-ray) on 12/10, and Sammo Hung’s Eastern Condors (1987) (Spine #1244 on Blu-ray) on 12/17! Paris, Texas and No Country for Old Men will both include Dolby Vision HDR. No Country for Old Men is a Miramax title currently controlled by Paramount, so this is a licensing situation (and a welcome one). First up, Universal has just set the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! for Blu-ray and DVD release on 6/7 (SRP $34.98 and $29.98). Both versions will include 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Directing Hollywood, The Stars Align, An Era of Glamour, and Magic of a Bygone Era). Well... I suppose you could call this Star Wars week, given Disney’s The Force Awakens arrives on Blu-ray tomorrow. I know that some of you have already received your copies in the mail – a few online retailers (including Target, Best Buy and Amazon) began shipping them to pre-order customers early. If you haven’t done so yet, you can pre-order a copy via Amazon here at this link. And of course, you can read our in-depth review of the Blu-ray here at The Bits. It’s a pretty good release – fine Blu-ray A/V quality and that documentary is a gem. I expect there will be more than a few people around the States who end up coming down with cases of “Force flu” this week to stay home and check it out. We’ve got just a quick update for you all on this silliest of all days...

No fooling here though: Star Trek.com has just revealed that CBS is releasing Star Trek: The Original Series – The Complete Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Complete Series Blu-ray “Mega Packs” in June (SRP $99.99 and $208.99, respectively). Unfortunately, as we indicated in our previous article on the subject a couple weeks ago, these are simply repackages of the previously released single-season Blu-ray sets. It doesn’t appear that there will be any new content. (Note that there will also be a DVD repackage of the TNG set for SRP $144.99.) This is, at least, an opportunity to purchase the series on Blu-ray at a somewhat reduced price. We’ve got a couple of new Blu-ray Disc reviews for you today. Our own Jim Hemphill has offered up his thoughts on Richard Brooks’ 1969 drama The Happy Ending, which is now available from Twilight Time. And, in case you missed it when I first posted it on Friday evening, I’ve completed my in-depth look at Disney and Lucasfilm’s forthcoming Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film looks fantastic and, let me tell you, Laurent Bouzereau’s new Secrets of The Force Awakens behind-the-scenes documentary is terrific. The Happy Ending is now available, while The Force Awakens arrives in stores here in the States next Tuesday. [Read on here…]

Okay... first things first: At some point today, I should have Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-ray in hand. As soon as I do, I’ll start working on my review and will get it posted as quickly as possible. So be sure to keep checking back for that.

Speaking of Disney, the studio has just set The Finest Hours for Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, and digital release on 5/24. Both disc versions will include 2 featurettes (Brotherhood and The Finest Inspiration: The U.S. Coast Guard). To this, the Blu-ray will add the all-new documentary Against All Odds: The Bernie Webber Story, plus 2 more featurettes (Two Crews and What Is Your Finest Hour?), and a pair of deleted scenes (A Desperate Idea and The Story of How They Met). Okay... Fox sources have confirmed that the forthcoming 2-disc Independence Day: 20th Anniversary Blu-ray should include the following extras on Disc One: Both the Theatrical and Extended Cuts of film, audio commentary with director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin (on both Theatrical and Extended Cut), audio commentary with VFX supervisors Volker Engel and Doug Smith (Theatrical Cut), and the Independence Day Datastream Trivia Track (Theatrical Cut). On Disc Two of the set look for the following (most carried over from the previous Five Star Edition DVD): The Making of ID4 behind-the-scenes documentary, Creating Reality behind-the-scenes documentary, The ID4 Invasion “mocumentary” produced for use in film, original bi-plane ending (with commentary), theatrical trailer and 3 teaser trailers, 1 15-second TV spot, 5 30-second TV spots, Super Bowl TV spot, Apple Computer TV Spot, gallery of production photographs and conceptual artwork (Alien Beings, Alien Ships, Sets & Props), and 3 storyboard sequences (Welcome Wagon, Destruction and Bi-plane Ending). The Sound Separator Easter egg isn’t there, nor are the DVD-ROM options, but still – this is pretty good news for fans of the film.  [Read on here…]

Today’s post is a quick one, but we’ve got a few important updates for you...

First, we’ve confirmed with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment that their forthcoming Independence Day: 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray should include nearly all of the bonus features from previous releases with the exception of the interactive game that was present on the last Blu-ray release. We hope to have the full list soon, as well as an update on the release of UHD release of ID4K (probably day and date with BD and DVD, but we’re waiting for official confirmation of that).  [Read on here…]
