Good afternoon, folks! We’re starting the week off with four new disc reviews...

Stuart has given Via Vision’s On the Buses Film Collection box set a review, which includes On the Buses (1971), Mutiny on the Buses (1972), and Holiday on the Buses (1973) all on Blu-ray. These of course are based on the popular British TV sitcom from the late 1960s and early 70s.

Dennis has taken a look at Raoul Walsh’s They Drive by Night (1940) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

Stephen has offered his thoughts on Andrei Tarkovsky’s Nostalghia (1983) in 4K Ultra HD from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And finally, I’ve completed an in-depth review of one of my favorite films: Sergio Leone’s magnificent Western epic Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) in 4K Ultra HD from Paramount via their Paramount Presents line. And I’m afraid the disc is... complicated.

The Digital Bits and History, Legacy & Showmanship are pleased to present this multi-page retrospective commemorating the 40th anniversary of the release of Superman II, the 1980/1981/2006 follow-up to 1978’s Superman: The Movie and featuring Christopher Reeve reprising his legendary dual role of Superman and alter ego Clark Kent.

Taking over from Richard Donner midway through production, Richard Lester (The Three Musketeers, Help!) directed and re-shot much of the Saturn Award-winning sequel, which focused on the three Kyptonian outlaws (Terrence Stamp, Sarah Douglas and Jack O’Halloran) breaking free from their cosmic imprisonment and seeking revenge on the Man of Steel.

The first Superman sequel—also starring Clifton James as Sheriff and E.G. Marshall as The President—featured reprisal performances by Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Ned Beatty as Otis, Jackie Cooper as Perry White, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Valerie Perrine as Miss Teschmacher, Susannah York as Superman’s biological mother Lara, and Marc McClure as Jimmy Olsen. All right, we’ve got a new 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray review for you: I was up late last night working on my thoughts on Paramount’s Star Trek Into Darkness which, I have to say, is right up there with Fox’s Deadpool and The Revenant in terms of establishing a bar for reference quality on this format. Okay... first things first: At some point today, I should have Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-ray in hand. As soon as I do, I’ll start working on my review and will get it posted as quickly as possible. So be sure to keep checking back for that.

Speaking of Disney, the studio has just set The Finest Hours for Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, and digital release on 5/24. Both disc versions will include 2 featurettes (Brotherhood and The Finest Inspiration: The U.S. Coast Guard). To this, the Blu-ray will add the all-new documentary Against All Odds: The Bernie Webber Story, plus 2 more featurettes (Two Crews and What Is Your Finest Hour?), and a pair of deleted scenes (A Desperate Idea and The Story of How They Met). All right, in the wake of our report from a few months ago on Paramount’s out-of-control retail exclusives on the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-ray release (which quickly went viral around the Net and ultimately even inspired a Forbes piece), a follow-up post on this issue here at The Bits was inevitable.  Because the truth is, most of the Hollywood studios are involved in the practice of giving retailers special “exclusive” BD content they can advertise as “only available here!”  In fact, this has been going on for years.  [Read on here...]

All right, couple things today…

First, I’ve got that Blu-ray review I promised yesterday: My thoughts on Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, coming in HD from Warner on 11/12.  I know this film divided movie geeks over the summer, but I have no uncertainty in my feelings for it.  I think it’s a great take on the mythos and a rare superhero film that I’m actually excited about.  And the Blu-ray’s not half bad either.  Do check it out.  [Read on here…]

Sony has announced that Insidious: Chapter 2 will arrive on Blu-ray Combo and DVD on 12/24 (SRP $40.99 and $30.99).  Extras will include 6 featurettes (Peripheral Vision: Behind the Scenes, Ghostly Transformation, Leigh Whannell’s Insidious Journal, The Haunting of Insidious 2, Work in Progress: On Set Q&A and Insidious: Spectral Sightings).  [Read on here…]

Okay, apparently we’re not done yet today...

Warner Home Video has just officially announced the Blu-ray 3D Combo, Blu-ray Combo and DVD release of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel on 11/12 (SRP $44.95, $35.99 and $29.98).  There will also be a 3D Limited Collector’s Edition (SRP $59.99) that includes the Blu-ray 3D Combo along with a limited release metal “S” glyph with lucite glass stand.
