October Sky, It Came from Outer Space & The Ghost and Mr. Chicken at Best Buy, plus new Blu-ray reviews
We’re closing out the week here at The Bits with another quick column, but we have some great stuff for you to check out...
First, I’ve turned in an in-depth review of Warner’s The Iron Giant: Signature Edition on Blu-ray. Trust me, the disc is not to be missed. It includes both the theatrical and Signature versions of the film, plus new extras, and nearly all of the legacy DVD special features too. The disc streets next Tuesday (9/6). Check out my review here.
Also today, our old friend Jack Jameson weighs in this afternoon on Arrow Video’s new Female Prisoner Scorpion: The Complete Collection Blu-ray box set, which includes the films Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion, Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41, Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable, and Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701’s Grudge Song, plus extras. The series stars Meiko Kaji of Lady Snowblood fame, who was the inspiration for Uma Thurman’s character in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films. [Read on here…]

Roddenberry Vault announced, Hunger Games goes 4K & Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant: Signature Edition is terrific
All right, today’s post is going to be a quick one, as I’m celebrating my 26th wedding anniversary with my lovely wife, Sarah. But we do have a couple bits of very good news for you…
The first big announcement today is that CBS, Paramount, and the estate of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry are officially releasing a 3-disc Blu-ray collection on 12/13 called Star Trek: The Original Series – The Roddenberry Vault. Produced by our old friend Roger Lay, Jr., who created many of the amazing features for the recent Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-rays, this set will contain 12 classic Original Series episodes (specifically The Corbomite Maneuver, Arena, Space Seed, This Side of Paradise, The Devil in the Dark, The City on the Edge of Forever, Operation – Annihilate!, Metamorphosis, Who Mourns for Adonais?, Mirror, Mirror, The Trouble with Tribbles, and Return to Tomorrow) along with 3 new documentaries, including Inside the Roddenberry Vault (featuring Rod Roddenberry looking at long-lost film reels), Star Trek: Revisiting a Classic (a retrospective look at back at the making of the series), and Strange New Worlds: Visualizing the Fantastic (a look at the series’ visual effects and futuristic technology). Before we begin this afternoon, our own Tim Salmons has turned in another Pick-Ups Blu-ray review for you to check out, this time featuring a look at Synapse Films' Steelbook release of Dario Argento’s Tenebrae (1982). Do check that out here.
All right, the big news today is that Paramount has just officially announced the 6/7 release of the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – Director’s Edition on Blu-ray (as we first revealed here on The Digital Bits a few weeks ago). The film itself has been remastered from a new 4K scan, with the participation of director Nicholas Meyer, and will be included on the disc in 1080p in both the original theatrical cut and the slightly longer Director’s Cut, each with 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio. We hope you all had a nice holiday/WonderCon weekend... or just a weekend for the rest of you.
We’ve got a couple of new Blu-ray Disc reviews for you today. Our own Jim Hemphill has offered up his thoughts on Richard Brooks’ 1969 drama The Happy Ending, which is now available from Twilight Time. And, in case you missed it when I first posted it on Friday evening, I’ve completed my in-depth look at Disney and Lucasfilm’s forthcoming Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film looks fantastic and, let me tell you, Laurent Bouzereau’s new Secrets of The Force Awakens behind-the-scenes documentary is terrific. The Happy Ending is now available, while The Force Awakens arrives in stores here in the States next Tuesday. [Read on here…]

Blu-ray News – Iron Giant is officially coming to BD in 2016, plus Shaun the Sheep, Wolf Totem & Man in the High Castle

It’s official… sort of: Warner Home Video has just announced that Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant: Signature Edition is NOW AVAILABLE for purchase on streaming, digital HD, and UltraViolet (you can watch it here on Amazon now). Before you get bent out of shape about that, however, the press release also says that the film will be available on Blu-ray Disc in 2016. As many of you know, Bird has been lobbying WB hard for the film to be released as a really good special edition on Blu-ray. It’s possible that he needs the extra time to work on the special features. So while it’s not quite the news we’ve been waiting for, it’s good to know that a Blu-ray release is coming… even if fans will have to be patient a little while longer for it. [Read on here…]
A Comic-Con 2015 update with a Bits panel report, new Die Hard set, X-Files, Marvel TV titles & MUCH more!
[Editor’s Note: Be sure to like TheDigitalBits.com page on Facebook for breaking news, site updates on the go, discussion with our staff and other readers, giveaways and more!]
Comic-Con 2015 is a wrap and there’s plenty of good geek news to report for you today!
First though, our own Mario Boucher posted a new Inside Cinema column back on Thursday (in case you missed it) looking back at The Terminator films. Do check it out.
Now then... our Digital Bits Comic-Con panel went very well on Thursday afternoon! We had a packed room with lots of Bits readers asking great questions about Blu-ray. Our friend Charles de Lauzirika revealed that he’s officially working on the forthcoming Blu-ray of Ridley Scott’s The Martian. Cliff Stephenson is busy working on the Hannibal: Season Three Blu-ray for Lionsgate. And of course Robert Meyer Burnett has just completed the Prelude to Axanar Blu-ray for backers of that project on Kickstarter. Rob is also working with executive producer Alec Peters and myself on the full Star Trek: Axanar feature film – Rob is going to direct the film and I’m co-writing it with Alec. (As it happens, Charles de Lauzirika is helping to produce the film, and Cliff is going to produce the forthcoming Blu-ray special features, so quite literally everyone on our Bits panel is involved in the Axanar project.) You can view the project’s IndieGoGo page here (it launched during Comic-Con). More on that in a moment. As the panel wound on, we discussed the future of Blu-ray and indie studio releases on the format, we talked a little about Ultra HD Blu-ray (we’ll have more on that later this month), and we took questions from the audience. All right, this is our last post until Friday, as we’re off to Comic-Con. A couple things first…
We’ve posted a couple more Blu-ray reviews for you to enjoy today, featuring Joe Marchese’s thoughts on Invitation to a Gunfighter (1964) and Jim Hemphill’s take on War-Gods of the Deep (1965), both new on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.
Also, we’re going to have a new Inside Cinema column from Mario Boucher looking at The Terminator films tomorrow. Watch for that to appear in the Latest Column area on the left side of the page there. [Read on here…]
