We have a big new disc review for you here at The Bits: Stephen has just taken an in-depth look at the Japanese-import version of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One (2023) in 4K Ultra HD from Toho. I should not there that there are no English subtitles, but the package is pretty spectacular.

We don’t yet know when the film will be released on disc here in the States, but we’re digging into it and hope to learn more soon.

Dennis’ thoughts on Lou Breslow’s You Never Can Tell (1951) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

In terms of announcement news today, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have officially set Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 6/11, with the Digital release expected on 5/14. Both the Blu-ray and 4K will feature Dolby Atmos. [Read on here...]

This is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday here in the States, so there’s not a lot of release news happening at the moment. But we do have a few things to report for you today, plus some new disc reviews including...

Stuart’s thoughts on Kino Classics’ Soundies: The Ultimate Collection Blu-ray set, featuring short films of the 1940s, and E.A. Dupont’s Picadilly (1929) Blu-ray from Milestone Films and Kino Lorber.

Dennis’ take on Miloš Forman’s Valmont (1989) and Robert Wise’s Odds Against Tomorrow (1959) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, as well as W.S. Van Dyke’s Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

And Stephen’s look at Michael Mann’s Blackhat (2015) on 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video, as well as Joel M. Reed’s Bloodsucking Freaks (1976) and Michael Armstrong’s Mark of the Devil (1970) in 4K Ultra HD from Vinegar Syndrome.

Evening, folks! Sorry about the lack of an update yesterday, but I was A) busy working on several new disc reviews, and B) roped into doing the Thanksgiving grocery shopping here. And you know how that goes: It’s a zoo out there!

But as a result of our work, we’ve got no less than five new disc reviews for you to enjoy today...

First, Tim has taken a look at Brett Ratner’s The Silence of the Lambs prequel Red Dragon (2002), which is new on 4K Ultra HD from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Dennis has offered his take on William Kaufman and Johnny Strong’s Warhorse One (2023) on Blu-ray from Well Go USA Entertainment.

Stephen has delivered a look at Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City (2023) on Blu-ray from Universal, as well as Béla Ternovszky’s animated Cat City (1986) on Blu-ray from Deaf Crocodile and Vinegar Syndrome.

And I’ve posted my thoughts on Andrew Davis’ The Fugitive (1993) which just arrived today in a terrific new 4K Ultra HD release from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment, mastered from a new 8K scan of the original camera negative no less!

I’m also working on a review of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023) in 4K for posting very soon. The title streets today, but I’m still waiting on my review copy from Universal, which should be here in the next couple days. (FedEx is a little slow, what with the holiday week and all.) My review of the film itself is already complete, and as soon as the disc arrives I’ll dive right in and get the review posted ASAP. So be sure to watch for it. [Read on here...]

Afternoon, Bits readers and welcome to the new week and, of course, Halloween Eve!

We’ve got a little bit of ground to cover here today, but first I wanted to personally thank all those of you who have signed up to support The Digital Bits via Patreon. Since we first launched our Patreon five days ago, we’re up to 77 backers (and 104 members total), and we really appreciate your support. It means a lot, and it will make a real difference here, let me tell you.

Already, I’ve decided on a couple things: I’m making regular (almost daily) blog posts exclusively for our Patreon supporters that are a little different than the kind of thing I post here and on our social media. For example... my first-take thoughts on things I’m hearing from sources (release news, industry developments, and the like), first impressions on new review discs that I’ve had the chance to look at (before I publish the full in-depth reviews here on the site), and other odds and ends—the kinds of things that offer you a essentially a more personal and candid look behind the scenes here at The Bits. I’m also making the occasional public post for all members there, with information that’s relevant to all our readers—the kind of thing I’m going to share here in a minute today (disc replacement news, a PS5 firmware update of relevance to disc fans, the occasional piece of significant breaking news). And we’ll add more Patreon-exclusive features over time as we get used working there, learning what kinds of perks are possible, and what we can do without dramatically increasing our workload.

We’ve got a few interesting pieces of announcement news for you today...

First, Paramount has revealed new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook editions of the Mission: Impossible films today. Look for Mission: Impossible and Mission: Impossible 2 on 6/27, followed by Mission: Impossible 3 and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol on 7/4, and finally Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout on 7/11. You can see the Steelbook artwork for each below the break.

Paramount is also releasing an Amaray/wide-release version of Young Sherlock Holmes on Blu-ray on 6/27 (for those of you who passed on the Blu-ray Steelbook release).

Some of you will recall that we recently mentioned that Mill Creek is releasing The Event: The Complete Series on Blu-ray on 6/6. Well, Universal is also releasing La Brea: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray that same day.

Allied Vaughn has set Ben Steinbauer and Berndt Mader’s comedy documentary Chop & Steele for Blu-ray and DVD on 7/18.

The BBC is releasing Doctor Who: Jon Pertwee – Complete Season Three on Blu-ray on 7/11. [Read on here...]

While we’re waiting for Warner Bros. to announce their Superman: 5-Film Collection 4K release, which we expect to happen anytime now, we’ve got some more release news for you today and a couple new disc reviews as well.

Starting with the reviews, Stephen has taken a look at Patrice Leconte’s Monsieur Hire (1989) on Blu-ray from Cohen Film Collection.

Stephen has also reviewed Dale Fabrigar’s They Crawl Beneath (2022) on Blu-ray from Well Go USA Entertainment.

Now then, back on the topic of Superman 4K for a moment, it’s starting to look as if there will not be 4K singles of the films in the new collection here in the States, but rather simply the box set in deluxe Steelbook and standard Amaray packaging (you can see the Amazon US listings here and here). There are 4K singles available in the UK if you want them (we have them linked in our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits now, but curiously not Superman: The Movie—just the sequels—which could indicate that the new remaster of Superman: The Movie may be exclusive to the box set for a while. We’ll have to wait for Warner’s official press release to be sure.

As I said, that could drop at anytime, so we’ll be sure to post all the details when it arrives. [Read on here...]

Stephen has turned in his thoughts on Atsuko Ishizuka’s animated Goodbye, Don Glees! (2022, aka Gubbai, Don Gurîzu!), which is newly-available on Blu-ray from GKids and Shout! Factory.

And Tim has posted his thoughts on Laika and Shout! Factory’s new 4K Ultra HD editions of Henry Selick’s stop-motion animated Coraline (2009) in 4K Ultra HD—both the wide-release Amaray version and the Steelbook version.

We’re checking in today with a rare weekend My Two Cents update to bring you a little bit of new Blu-ray and 4K UHD release news that broke on Friday afternoon.

In announcement news today, Eureka! has just revealed a new 4K Ultra HD release for the UK, this one featuring Robert Wiene’s landmark horror classic Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920). Look for it to street on 5 December in a limited edition of just 3000 units, complete with a hardbound slipcase and a 100-page booklet. We’ve got one quick new Blu-ray review to share with you today. Stephen has given Tim Mielants’ Patrick (2019) a look on Region B Blu-ray, a disc that’s newly available from Anti-Worlds Releasing in the UK. You’ll find that here.

In terms of announcement news today, Sony has just officially set Heavy Metal for release on 4K Ultra HD on 4/19 in special Steelbook packaging. The release includes the original Heavy Metal remastered in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision HDR and now with a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack, both reviewed and approved by producer Ivan Reitman. You’ll also get the previous 5.1 mix as well as the original 1981 theatrical Dolby Stereo audio.

The 4K disc will also include the new Heavy Metal: A Look Back retrospective featurette. The package also includes Heavy Metal and its sequel Heavy Metal 2000 on Blu-ray Disc, each with its previous special features. And you’ll get a Digital code as well.
