We’ve got a bunch of stuff for you to enjoy here at The Bits today, starting with a trio of new columns here at the site.
First, the good Dr. Jahnke has turned in his latest installment of Burnt Offerings: MOD DVD, running down the latest in small batch, hand crafted DVDs and Blu-rays. He’s also added new component to the column that he’s calling Wide Awake in Streamland, which details worth deep catalog film and TV titles available for streaming via Warner Archive Instant, Netflix, Hulu Plus and the like. Be sure to check it out.
Also today, our own Michael Coate unloads both barrels of his History, Legacy and Showmanship column to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of TV’s Bewitched and the seminal James Bond film Goldfinger! For each column Michael conducts a roundtable discussion with film historians and experts. You definitely don’t want to miss them – here’s the Bewitched piece and here’s Goldfinger. Enjoy! Today’s post is a quick one, as I have family visiting this weekend. However, we do have a couple things for you today…
First, Tim has posted a review of Twilight Time’s new Blu-ray of Two Rode Together, a classic John Ford and Jimmy Stewart western from 1961. Do give it a look. [Read on here…]

New Twilight Time announcements, Bebop date, Looney Tunes Back in Action, Star Wars: Rebels & more
We’ve got a new review for you today and a great new column as well.
First, Tim Salmons has turned in his thoughts on Scream Factory’s Eve of Destruction on Blu-ray. Nothing like a little B-grade rampaging cyborg action. Do check it out.
Also today, our own Bud Elder has a new View from the Cheap Seats column for you as well, in which he tells more tales of his time leading Hollywood types around the state of Oklahoma on location scouting trips. Don’t miss it. [Read on here…]

More Tales of Oklahoma Location Scouting
Here are a couple of other stories from the salt mines of Oklahoma location scouting. There’s many, many more. But I can only bore so much..
Both tales involve the terrific writer, film critic and Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Hunter. In his 1993 novel Point of Impact, Hunter created the character Bob Lee “The Nailer” Swagger, which has now been featured, along with his father, Earl, in some 12 novels, the most recent of which is Sniper’s Honor. Comic-Con 2014, Million Dollar Arm, Sleeping Beauty: Diamond, new Twilight Time, Kino Classics & more
All right, first up today I wanted to let you all know that although The Bits is going to be at San Diego Comic-Con this month, a combination of personal/real-life business and other factors means we aren’t doing our regular Blu-ray and DVD panel event this year. Frankly, I think many of us just needed a break from the usual “demise of discs” commiseration, and wanted a chance instead to go down to the Con and just enjoy it in a more relaxed way.
That said, all the usual Bits suspects will be down in San Diego on Thursday and Friday. Before and after the Con, I’ll be reporting here at The Bits on all the BD-related news. You can expect details on TV Batman, lot of new Shout! and Scream Factory titles, the upcoming Twin Peaks BD set and much more. [Read on here…]

Warner v. Amazon goes viral, new Alamo story, 24: Live Another Day, Twilight Zone 80s, Twilight Time art & more
We’ve got some interesting odds and ends to talk about today… nothing major, but a few things worth touching out.
First, remember that story we posted last week about the contract kerfuffle between Amazon and Warner Home Video? Turns out it got picked up by The New York Times yesterday and both the Wall Street Journal and CNN Money today (among others – the story has basically gone everywhere today, but our thanks to NYT, WSJ and CNN Money for mentioning our involvement in breaking it). I should tip the hat to our very own Jeff Kleist who first sniffed out that something might be going on there a couple of weeks ago, thus setting me on the case with our industry sources. It’s funny how these things go viral. I didn’t think it was that big a story, but it turns out that Amazon is also in similar disputes with various book publishing companies too, including Hachette, so the sum of this story became bigger than its parts. New columns, Zulu U.K. screening tonight, Hepburn & Twilight’s July, plus Uni catalog Blus & Hammer Horror DVD set
Okay... just a quick update today. I dropped my cell phone this weekend and cracked the screen. Naturally, I didn’t buy the insurance since Verizon talked me into buying the fancy indestructible case. So anyway, it’s meant a couple days scrambling while I try to get it fixed.
Meanwhile, we do have a new Doogan’s Queue for you today from Todd, covering today’s new releases on Blu-ray and DVD. We’ve also got Dr. Jahnke’s latest Burnt Offerings: MOD DVD column detailing the latest from Warner Archive and such. And be sure to check out our weekly update of the Release Dates & Artwork section from Russell. [Read on here...]

On Oklahoma Location Scouting, John Wayne, New Classics on Disc & More!
For a long time, I had the honor of serving the people of Oklahoma as their state film commissioner. I took the job only because we hadn’t created yet the position of “Lord High Minister of Culture.” To know the movie business was but a small component of the being the liaison with Hollywood – the job was for the most part about locations, locations, locations and I knew every bright golden haze on every Sooner state meadow and every field of corn as high as an elephant’s eye.
