A Se7en 4K update, Shout! & Henson Co. make a new distribution deal & more, plus Bill Mechanic gets it
We’re finishing the week here at The Bits first with more new disc reviews, including…
Stuart’s take on Fran Rubel Kuzui’s Tokyo Pop (1988) and Michael Powell’s The Edge of the World (1937) both on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
Dennis’ thoughts on Allen Baron’s Blast of Silence (1961) on Blu-ray from Criterion, Josh Greenbaum’s Strays (2023) on Blu-ray from Universal, Bernard Girard’s Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round (1966) on Blu-ray from Imprint Films, and Val Guest’s The Quartermass Xperiment (1955) on Blu-ray from Hammer Films via Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
And Stephen’s review of The Films of Doris Wishman: The Daylight Years on Blu-ray from AGFA, Something Weird, and Vinegar Syndrome, Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes & Huntsmen – Parts One and Two (2023) on 4K Ultra HD from Warner Bros. and DC, and Jannik Hastrup and Flemming Quist Møller’s animated classic Benny’s Bathtub (1971) on Blu-ray from Deaf Crocodile via Vinegar Syndrome.
As always, more reviews are forthcoming next week, so be sure to watch for them.
Also, we’ve posted a few interesting things on our new Patreon page, including a new film review (not a disc review) from Stephen of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One (2023) as well as a blog post from yours truly about the future 4K Ultra HD plans of a major studio we tend to talk a lot about here at the site. I’ll have more to say about that subject here on The Bits in the weeks and months ahead, but the blog posts I’ve been doing on Patreon felt like the more appropriate place to vent a little bit on the subject. Jurassic Park: Dominion is finally official for 8/16, plus Reservoir Dogs in 4K, Shout! & Henson ink distribution deal & more
We’ve got a great new disc review for you this afternoon, and we’ve got some significant release news to report as well. First up, that review...
Tim has just turned in his in-depth look at Rod Serling’s Night Gallery: Season Two (1971-1972) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics as expected. Sounds like it’s another great release that’s loaded with special features, including audio commentary on many episodes. Don’t miss it.
Now then... file this in the “better late than never” category, but Universal has finally made their Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and Digital release of Colin Treverrow’s Jurassic World: Dominion official, and it is indeed expected to street next Tuesday (8/16). Extras on the Blu-ray SKUs will include the Battle at Big Rock short film, the A New Breed of VFX featurette, and the multi-part Dinosaurs Among Us: Inside Jurassic World Dominion 45-minute documentary. You’ll also get both the Theatrical Version and a new 14-minute longer Extended Edition, which includes an alternate opening and more.
Both Blu-ray SKUs will include DTS-X object-based surround sound, and the 4K Ultra HD release will feature both HDR10 and Dolby Vision high dynamic range. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below. [Read on here...]

Retro Release Day: Farscape: Starburst Edition – 4-disc versions (2004)
Today’s Retro Release Day title here at The Bits is one that caught the eye of more than a few of our readers in the background of photos I’ve posted of recent Retro Release Day titles. I’m speaking of ADV Films’ 4-disc Farscape: Starburst Edition DVDs!
Farscape, which celebrated its 20th anniversary on March 19, was a Sci-Fi Channel original series that debuted in 1999 from The Jim Henson Company and Hallmark Entertainment. An Australian-American production, the live action science fiction series was created by Rockne S. O’Bannon and starred Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Virginia Hey, Anthony Simcoe, Gigi Edgley, Paul Goddard, Lani Tupu, and Wayne Pygram.
The series was first released on DVD starting in 2001 by ADV Films in a regular DVD edition (with 2 episodes per set plus extras on one DVD-9 disc). This was followed in 2005 by an initial Starburst Edition release (with 6-7 episodes per set plus additional extras on 2 DVD-18 discs). Both releases presented the series in the original broadcast 1.33:1 (or 4x3) TV aspect ratio, save for Season Four which switched production to 1.78:1 (or 16x9). Audio was lossy Dolby Digital.
