We’ve got a couple more new disc reviews to start the week with here at The Bits...

Stephen has given Alfred Hitchcock’s Rich and Strange (1931) a look on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

He’s also offered his thoughts today on John Duigan’s Sirens (1994) on Blu-ray from Umbrella Entertainment, recently released as part of their Sunburnt Screens label.

And we’ve got another new History, Legacy & Showmanship piece for you this afternoon from our own Michael Coate. Michael’s film retrospectives take a great deal of time and effort to produce, and as such they occasionally become bonus content. So here’s a fun “leftover” from 2021 in which Michael and film historian Gary Gerani celebrate the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s Duel. Enjoy!

Now then... the big announcement news today is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially set Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix Resurrections for release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on 3/8 (SRP $29.99, $24.99, and $19.99), with the Digital release available on 1/25. [Read on here...]

We’ve got a bunch of ground to cover today, including a TON of new and recent disc reviews, lots of 4K Ultra HD catalog and new release news, and some regular Blu-ray news as well. I’ve been so distracted over the last week or so, what with all of the major announcements and the time required to track down and confirm release rumors, that I’ve neglected to mention the many disc reviews that we’ve posted here at the site during that time. So, let’s tackle those first...

Stephen has turned in his thoughts on Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch (2021) and Scott Cooper’s Antlers (2021) from 20th Century Studios, James C Wasson’s Night of the Demon (1980) from Severin Films, and Dario Argento’s Trauma (1993) from Vinegar Syndrome, all on Blu-ray Disc.

Tim has looked at Barry Sonnenfeld’s The Addams Family (1991) from Paramount, David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001) from Criterion, Dennis Donnelly’s The Toolbox Murders (1978) from Blue Underground, and William Lustig’s Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence (1993) from Blue Underground, all in 4K Ultra HD, as well as the Nasty Habits: The Nunsploitation Collection from Severin Films, John Hancock’s Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971) from Imprint Films, Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996) from Paramount, and Brian Trenchard-Smith’s Turkey Shoot (1982) from Umbrella Entertainment, all on Blu-ray.

And Dennis has delivered his take on Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) as recently re-issued by Paramount, as well as Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude (1971), also from Paramount and both released on regular Blu-ray.

All of these titles are worth a look and there’s certainly something for everyone in that line-up. If you’re a fan of It’s a Wonderful Life, don’t forget that our own Michael Coate recently profiled the film for its 75th anniversary in his most recent History, Legacy and Showmanship column here at The Bits—it’s definitely worth a look if you missed at Christmas time. First things first today: The Criterion Collection has just announced their April Blu-ray and 4K release slate and—as always—it’s another great list of titles.

Look for Alex Cox’s Walker (Spine #423 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/12, Vittorio De Sica’s Miracle in Milan (Spine #1119 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Frank Tashlin’s The Girl Can’t Help It (Spine #1120 – Blu-ray only) on 4/19, and Arie and Chuko Esiri’s Eyimofe (This Is My Desire) (Spine #1121 – Blu-ray and DVD), Bertrand Tavernier’s ‘Round Midnight (Spine #1122 – Blu-ray and DVD), and Al Reinert’s For All Mankind (Spine #54 – 4K Ultra HD – Blu-ray and DVD already available) on 4/26. You can see the 4K art for For All Mankind on the left, and we’ll post the rest of the cover artwork over the next few days as the titles become available for pre-order on Amazon.

Here’s some more great breaking news: Our friends at Powerhouse Films have just informed us that their outstanding Indicator label—which already delivers fantastic special edition Blu-ray titles to the UK and European market—is officially coming to the US!

The company has partnered with Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment, to ensure that retailers throughout North America will be able to carry Indicator releases. These will include Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Sunrise, Critics Choice, and DiabolikDVD. The first Indicator titles should start becoming available here in the US starting this week. [Read on here...]

We’re starting off the week with a trio of new Blu-ray reviews...

Stephen has taken a look at Nadia Tass’ Malcolm (1986) on Blu-ray from Umbrella Entertainment, along with Ralph Thomas’ Percy (1971) on the format from Code Red via Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And Dennis has given Jonathan Mostow’s Breakdown (1997) a thorough going-over on Blu-ray via the new Paramount Presents release. As most of you know, the film stars Kurt Russell, J. T. Walsh, and Kathleen Quinlan.

Now then, in announcement news today, our friends at Kino Lorber Studio Classics have revealed that they’re prepping a new 4K Ultra HD release of the 1963 John Sturges classic The Great Escape for release sometime in January. [Read on here...]

All right, we’re rounding out the week with another trio of new disc reviews...

First, Tim has turned in this thoughts on Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat (2021) in 4K Ultra HD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Stephen has offered a review of Robert Aldrich’s Vera Cruz (1954), an influential UA/MGM titles new on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And I’ve taken a look at The Little Rascals: The ClassicFlix Restorations – Volume 2 on Blu-ray, which includes the next set of 11 vintage shorts from 1930 to 1931.

All right, we’ve got a little bit of ground to cover today news-wise, so let’s get right to it...

First up, Universal has officially announced F9: The Fast Saga for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 9/21, with the Digital release expected on 9/7. Both the Blu-ray and 4K will include Dolby Atmos audio. The 4K disc will also include HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision high dynamic range. These discs will feature both the theatrical cut and a Director’s Cut that runs about 7 minutes longer. Extras will include audio commentary on both versions with director Justin Lin, a gag reel, and 6 featurettes (F9: All In, Practically Fast, Shifting Priorities, Justice for Han, A Day on Set with Justin Lin, and John Cena: Supercar Superfan). You can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

Disney has officially announced the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of The Jungle Cruise on 11/16, just four days after it goes into wide availability on Disney+. The Digital release is expected on 8/31. Look for the 4K disc to include HDR10 high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include a Jungle Cruise Expedition Mode viewing option (that includes pop-up trivia), 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (It’s a Jungle Out There: Making Jungle Cruise, Dwayne and Emily: Undoubtedly Funny, Creating the Amazon, and Once a Skip, Always a Skip), outtakes, and 11 deleted scenes. The cover artwork isn’t available yet.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has set Space Jam: A New Legacy for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 10/5, with the Digital release expected on 9/3. Look for HDR10 high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos audio on the 4K. Extras will include 4 featurettes (First Quarter: Game On, Second Quarter: Teamwork, Third Quarter: Out of This World, and Fourth Quarter: The Looniest), plus deleted scenes. All right, the big news today is that Criterion has just officially announced their November slate of Blu-ray—and yes, 4K Ultra HD—titles!

They begin with an upgrade of Federico Fellini’s La strada (Spine #219 – Blu-ray) on 11/2, followed by an upgrade of David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr. (Spine #799 – Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Combo) and Once Upon a Time in China: The Complete Films (Spine #1103 – Blu-ray – includes Once Upon a Time in China I-V) on 11/16, and Albert and Allen Hughes’ Menace II Society (Spine #1105 – Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Combo) and Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane (Spine #1104 – Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Combo) on 11/23. Let’s talk 4Ks...

Mulholland Dr. will include a new 4K digital restoration, supervised by director David Lynch and director of photography Peter Deming, with a 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR.

Menace II Society will include a new 4K digital restoration of the directors’ cut of the film, supervised by cinematographer Lisa Rinzler and codirector Albert Hughes, with 7.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR.

Citizen Kane will include a new 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack. Again, the 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR. [Read on here...]

We’ve got some big release news today, but first we’re starting the week off with a trio of new disc reviews...

I’ve given Akira Kurosawa’s Ran a look in 4K Ultra HD from StudioCanal and found it to be a pretty impressive upgrade, save for a less than stellar English subtitle translation. It’s definitely worth a look for cinephiles.

Also, I’ve just reviewed Mel Stuart’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in 4K Ultra HD from Warner Bros, a release that celebrates the film’s 50th anniversary. It’s certainly never looked better (and it’s finally presented in the correct 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio as well).

Finally, I’ve also posted my thoughts on John Krasinski’s long-delayed A Quiet Place: Part II in 4K UHD from Paramount. It’s a more satisfying film than the original and it looks and sounds terrific, though the extras leave much to be desired.

First up, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially set Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla (2014) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 3/23. It will feature HDR10 high dynamic range with Dolby Atmos audio. It will also include the previously released special features, among them the 3-part MONARCH Declassified documentary and the 4-part The Legendary Godzilla documentary.
