Ghostbusters, Stripes director Ivan Reitman dies at 75
We’re all busy working on new disc reviews here at The Bits today, but I wanted to chime in quickly here today to acknowledge a bit of sad news.
The great filmmaker Ivan Reitman has died. He apparently passed away in his sleep on Saturday at the age of 75.
Reitman was of course the director of such comedy classics as Meatballs, Stripes, Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, Twins, Kindergarten Cop, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Draft Day, and more.
Reitman also produced or executive produced many additional films, among them Animal House, Heavy Metal, Private Parts, and the recent Ghostbusters: Afterlife. [Read on here...]
Sony makes its Heavy Metal 4K Steelbook official for release on 4/19, plus more Blu-ray & Ultra HD pre-orders
We’ve got one quick new Blu-ray review to share with you today. Stephen has given Tim Mielants’ Patrick (2019) a look on Region B Blu-ray, a disc that’s newly available from Anti-Worlds Releasing in the UK. You’ll find that here.
In terms of announcement news today, Sony has just officially set Heavy Metal for release on 4K Ultra HD on 4/19 in special Steelbook packaging. The release includes the original Heavy Metal remastered in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision HDR and now with a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack, both reviewed and approved by producer Ivan Reitman. You’ll also get the previous 5.1 mix as well as the original 1981 theatrical Dolby Stereo audio.
The 4K disc will also include the new Heavy Metal: A Look Back retrospective featurette. The package also includes Heavy Metal and its sequel Heavy Metal 2000 on Blu-ray Disc, each with its previous special features. And you’ll get a Digital code as well. First up, Tim and Stephen have jointly reviewed David Gordon Green’s Halloween Kills (2021) in 4K Ultra HD from Universal. And well... suffice it to say they didn’t care for it much. It is, however, an impressive 4K disc. You can read all about it here.
Speaking of KLSC, the company has been working overtime lately to announce more of their upcoming Blu-ray and 4K catalog titles, so now is a good time to provide a quick round-up of the titles they’ve revealed in recent weeks for release in March and April...

Criterion reveals its April slate, plus Indicator comes to the US, and LOTS more new 2022 catalog 4K Ultra HD titles!
First things first today: The Criterion Collection has just announced their April Blu-ray and 4K release slate and—as always—it’s another great list of titles.
Look for Alex Cox’s Walker (Spine #423 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/12, Vittorio De Sica’s Miracle in Milan (Spine #1119 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Frank Tashlin’s The Girl Can’t Help It (Spine #1120 – Blu-ray only) on 4/19, and Arie and Chuko Esiri’s Eyimofe (This Is My Desire) (Spine #1121 – Blu-ray and DVD), Bertrand Tavernier’s ‘Round Midnight (Spine #1122 – Blu-ray and DVD), and Al Reinert’s For All Mankind (Spine #54 – 4K Ultra HD – Blu-ray and DVD already available) on 4/26. You can see the 4K art for For All Mankind on the left, and we’ll post the rest of the cover artwork over the next few days as the titles become available for pre-order on Amazon.
Here’s some more great breaking news: Our friends at Powerhouse Films have just informed us that their outstanding Indicator label—which already delivers fantastic special edition Blu-ray titles to the UK and European market—is officially coming to the US!
The company has partnered with Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment, to ensure that retailers throughout North America will be able to carry Indicator releases. These will include Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Sunrise, Critics Choice, and DiabolikDVD. The first Indicator titles should start becoming available here in the US starting this week. [Read on here...]
