It’s been a little crazy here the last couple days. Review product for ID4, Star Trek, and Star Trek Into Darkness in 4K Ultra HD has arrived and I’m starting to work on my reviews of each. I’m going to try to post at least one of them today, and maybe another tomorrow. The Martian: Extended Edition should be here early next week, so I’ll get to work on that one too as soon as it comes in.

Sorry about the lack of a Tuesday post. I was working on a project late on Monday night and ended up not getting a wink of sleep. You know how it happens that, once you start thinking about something you just can’t stop, sleep be damned? So anyway, by Tuesday morning I was exhausted. Nevertheless, it seems there’s been quite a bit of news since then…

First up, it appears that there’s an error on the new Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – Director’s Cut Blu-ray (see my review here). During the Kobayashi Maru scene that opens the film, the same shot of Sulu is mistakenly repeated twice. Unlike the two lines removed from the DC by director Nicholas Meyer (near the end of the film – see my review) that wasn’t deliberate – it was just a mistake. Hell… I have to say, I missed it too, even though I know the film well and watched it twice. Anyway, the studio is already aware of the issue and almost certainly is going to correct it (in fact, I’m certain they will, but they need to get a statement prepared and get plans in place), which means a organizing a fix and a disc exchange program, etc. As soon as we get the official word back from our contacts there. we’ll let you know.  [Read on here…]

All right, just so you guys know, it’s my intention to review ID4, The Martian: Extended Edition, Star Trek, and Star Trek Into Darkness on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format as soon as review product comes in, but 4K product has been running a little late. Rest assured, though, I’ll get to them as soon as possible and to other titles as time permits.

First up, our own Tim Salmons has checked in with a new weekly Pick-Ups review column, which begins with an in-depth look at a fascinating 1960s horror title that’s gone through its share of revisions and re-issues: Blood Bath, which is now available in a very nice new Blu-ray edition from Arrow Video. Do give it a look.

Also today, Jim Hemphill has offered his thoughts on Henry Hathaway’s 1954 Cinemascope western Garden of Evil, which stars Gary Cooper, Susan Hayward, Richard Widmark, and Cameron Mitchell. It’s now available on Blu-ray from our friends at Twilight Time. It too is worth a look on disc, so enjoy the review. [Read on here…]

Welcome to a new edition of Pick-Ups!

Thank you for tuning in. Sorry for my absence, but I’ve been on a bit of a vacation. My Mom came down to visit with us, so our focus was on spending some time with her.

While she was here, we did manage to catch Keanu and Captain America: Civil War at the theater. Both were enjoyable and definitely going out and seeing if you haven’t yet (I’m sure most of you have seen the latter movie by now). [Read on here…]

All right... yesterday’s editorial column on the new 4K Ultra HD format was a lot of work as you can imagine, but I’ve been very gratified at the positive reaction to it. If you missed it, you can find it here. I’m going to have more 4K coverage and reviews soon, but I’m just trying to balance it all out with the regular Blu-ray news and whatnot.

On that score, we have a pair of new Blu-ray reviews for you to check out today, including Tim Salmons’ thoughts on The Zero Boys from Arrow Video, as well as Jim Hemphill’s take on In the French Style from Twilight Time. Both titles are now available and are well worth a look.

All right, I’m still working on that 4K coverage. The delay is not from lack of effort, I assure you. Samsung recently updated the UBD-K8500 player’s firmware, so I’ve been working to see what the result is in terms of player performance.

Meanwhile, we do have some great new 4K and Blu-ray news for you today: 20th Century Fox has just officially announced the 6/7 Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Ridley Scott’s The Martian: Extended Edition (the SRP appears to be $39.99 for either BD or 4K).  [Read on here…]

We’ve got another Blu-ray Disc review for you today. This time, Tim’s taken a look at Scream Factory’s new Death Becomes Her: Collector’s Edition. Do give it a look here.

In announcement news today (though it’s been available for pre-order for a while now), Fox has just officially set Deadpool for Blu-ray and DVD on 5/10 and announced details of the Blu-ray extras, will include audio commentary with director Tim Miller and Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld, a second commentary with Ryan Reynolds and writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, deleted and extended scenes with optional Miller commentary, a gag reel, the From Comics to Screen... to Screen documentary, galleries (of concept art, storyboards, costumes, pre-vis and “stunt-vis”), something called Deadpool’s Fun Snack, and more. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray version is also coming that day, and it will include the Blu-ray version (with these same extras) inside the packaging.
