American Movie in 4K from Sony Pictures Classics, plus Radiance Films’ November slate & the Warner Archive’s September includes Orson Welles’ Journey into Fear (1943)
We’ve got just a handful of announcement news items to share with you today...
The first is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just set Chris Smith’s American Movie (1999) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 10/15 in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary.
This will be a Sony Pictures Classics release. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR and the original English mono audio in lossless DTS-HD MA format.
Extras will include audio commentary with the director and cast, deleted scenes, the Coven short film by Mark Borchardt, and the film’s theatrical trailer. You can see the cover artwork at left.
Elsewhere around the Interwebs, various online retailers have begun taking pre-orders for the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of Eli Roth’s Borderlands (2024) and Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s Kill (2023) from Lionsgate, M. Night’s Shyamalan’s Trap (2024) from Warner Bros, Ti West’s MaXXXine (2024) from A24, and Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs (2024) from Neon/Decal. The street date for all of these is TBA. [Read on here...]

All of these films are well worth a look, and more new disc reviews are certainly on the way this week, so be sure to watch for them.
Now then, my apologies for the lack of a news update here since mid last week, but I have unfortunately had COVID. Fortunately, a mild case, but enough to knock me out of commission for a few days. But I’m well on the path to recovery and feeling well enough to catch you all up on the latest news here at The Bits today. So let’s get right to it... [Read on here...]

Hitchcock’s North by Northwest is coming to 4K, plus a Se7en Ultra HD update, Panic Room, South Park, Team America, Civil War, and more!
Morning, folks!
All right, Tim is going to have a couple of new disc reviews posted here at the site shortly, and I’ll be back tomorrow with more release news, plus my own in-depth review of Andor: The Complete First Season in 4K Ultra HD.
I’ve actually been working on that over the weekend, but my father-in-law has also been visiting with us here for the past week or so, and he’s headed off to the airport this evening for his return flight home. So, real life calls.
In the meantime, we do have a few pieces of release news that are kind of important to share with you all this morning. So let’s get right to them...
The first comes to us by way of the Warner Bros. Shop in the UK, which has now revealed that Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959) is finally coming to 4K Ultra HD later this year in honor of the film’s 65th anniversary! We don’t yet have a street date, but you can see the expanded packaging mock-up below the break. [Read on here...]

Criterion’s July slate includes Peckinpah, Wenders & Melville in 4K, plus Macbeth (1948), The Persuaders, Aliens Expanded & more!
To kick off a new week today, we have some interesting release news and a new disc review to share as well. Let’s get to the latter first...
Tim has offered his thoughts on Michele Soavi’s The Church (1989) in 4K Ultra HD from our friends at Severin Films.
More reviews are forthcoming this week, so be sure to stay tuned for them.
Also today here at The Bits, we’ve expanded our Patreon poll about Lionsgate 4K catalog Steelbooks to our Twitter/X page with just a day and a half left. The question is: Lionsgate Home Entertainment is developing a new line of 4K Ultra HD catalog Steelbooks, including many titles released previously as Best Buy exclusives, and they’d like your opinion: Would you prefer the covers to 1) feature newly-created custom artwork, or 2) the film’s original poster artwork? You can vote right now here on Patreon or here on Twitter/X and please take a moment to do so before the polls end on Wednesday. Thank you!
Now then, the big release news today is that Criterion has just announced its July 2024 slate of Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD titles, and this batch has some real gems as well as a couple of surprises. [Read on here...]

Look, Up in the Sky! Warner to bow Superman II-IV in 4K in 2023, plus Double Jeopardy in Ultra HD, Shout/Scream’s January slate & more!
Yes, it’s true!
This is information I first heard from industry insiders about six months ago, but was asked to keep quiet about to allow the work to be completed. But retailers are just now starting to catch wind of it, so I can unofficially confirm it here:
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is planning to release Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace in 4K Ultra HD in early 2023!
Superman II will include both the original theatrical version and the Richard Donner Cut.
Our sources suggest that—like Superman: The Movie in 4K—all three of these will feature Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Street date is still TBA on these officially, however we’ve been hearing Q2 2023, and Amazon UK has just leaked a 3 April street date for Superman III on their website (click here for that).
Do keep in mind that none of this should be considered 100% kosher and official until the studio makes their actual announcements in the weeks and months ahead. But Superman fans should be very happy around April of next year. [Read on here...]

Sony sets 1776 for 4K release, plus Criterion’s May slate includes Double Indemnity 4K, a lost Orson Welles film is found on videotape & more
We’ve got some great release news for you all today and of course more new disc reviews as well. As always, we’ll start with the reviews...
I’ve just posted my thoughts on Rian Johnson’s science fiction time-twister Looper (2012), which is finally available in 4K Ultra HD here in the States from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. What’s more—and unlike last year’s UK 4K release from eOne—this edition features fresh remastering by cinematographer Steve Yedlin, with a new Dolby Vision and HDR10 high dynamic range grade and a new Dolby Atmos mix too. Not only is it a big improvement on the original Blu-ray, it improves on the eOne 4K release too, so it’s definitely worth a look for fans.
Also today, Tim has posted a look at Bruce Beresford’s The Adventures of Barry McKenzie on Blu-ray from Umbrella Entertainment.
Stephen has offered his thoughts on Mervyn LeRoy and Busby Berkeley’s long-awaited Gold Diggers of 1933 new on Blu-ray from The Warner Archive Collection.
And Dennis has turned in his takes on Kino Classics’ Princess Tam Tam (1935) and Zou Zou (1934) double-feature and Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, both on Blu-ray. [Read on here...]

KL Studio Classics is working on Touch of Evil 4K, plus Shout!/Laika’s distribution deal, Warner’s Supernatural: The Complete Series BD & more
We’ve got a couple odds and ends for you today...
First, the big news... Shout! Factory has just reached a multi-year distribution agreement with the Portland-based Laika animation studio. The deal gives Shout! the U.S. packaged media distribution rights to the studio’s first four films: Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), The Boxtrolls (2014), ParaNorman (2012), and Coraline (2009). According to the report on The Hollywood Reporter, new bonus content is already in development for these films. Not only are new Blu-rays obviously in the offing, we can’t help thinking how great these titles would look again on Blu-ray 3D and for the first time on 4K Ultra HD as well.
Also today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just announced Supernatural: The Fifteenth and Final Season and Supernatural: The Complete Series for Blu-ray and DVD release on 5/25. The Fifteenth Season set includes 2 new featurettes, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and more (SRP $49.99 for Blu-ray and $44.98 for DVD). The Complete Series set includes all 327 episodes and all the previous bonus content, plus a 68-page book (SRP $359.99 for Blu-ray and $329.99 for DVD). [Read on here...]
