Hitchcock’s North by Northwest is coming to 4K, plus a Se7en Ultra HD update, Panic Room, South Park, Team America, Civil War, and more!

Morning, folks!

All right, Tim is going to have a couple of new disc reviews posted here at the site shortly, and I’ll be back tomorrow with more release news, plus my own in-depth review of Andor: The Complete First Season in 4K Ultra HD.

I’ve actually been working on that over the weekend, but my father-in-law has also been visiting with us here for the past week or so, and he’s headed off to the airport this evening for his return flight home. So, real life calls.

In the meantime, we do have a few pieces of release news that are kind of important to share with you all this morning. So let’s get right to them...

The first comes to us by way of the Warner Bros. Shop in the UK, which has now revealed that Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959) is finally coming to 4K Ultra HD later this year in honor of the film’s 65th anniversary! We don’t yet have a street date, but you can see the expanded packaging mock-up below the break. [Read on here...]

Per the shop listing, the film has been mastered from a new 4K restoration and will come in a new Ultimate Collector’s Edition with Steelbook packaging, lots of swag, and all of the legacy Blu-ray special features. This is in the UK at least; the US release will probably be more simple, per Warner’s usual approach. In any case, here’s what UK edition looks like...

Also, we reported about a month ago that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment might be delaying the long-expected 4K Ultra HD release of David Fincher’s Se7en to 2025. Well, now it looks like that may not be true after all. The title has been listed for pre-order on Amazon for a few months now with a street date of 5/3. But Zavvi UK shared word with their customers last month—reportedly from studio sources—that the title was going to be delayed into next year. Keep in mind, WBDHE still hasn’t officially announced this release. And yet Amazon also still hasn’t taken either of its 5/3 product pre-order pages down (they have one for a 4K Ultimate Collector’s Edition and another for a more deluxe 4K What’s in the Box Special Edition too). Meanwhile, Fincher himself has been doing interviews (including this one with IndieWire) talking about his new 8K remaster of the film (which premiered on 4/18 as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival here in Hollywood). So it seems possible that the title is still coming, either on 5/3 or later this year. Whatever the case may be, we would expect Warner Bros. to make some kind of official announcement very soon. We’ll update you as soon as they do and/or we know more. In the meantime, here are the pre-order links (just click on the images below)...

[Editor’s Note: We’ve just spoken to WBDHE and confirmed 1) that the 5/3 street date (listed on Amazon) for David Fincher’s Se7en in 4K Ultra HD is not correct and 2) that the official home entertainment release announcement is not imminent. We do, however, believe that the title is still expected in 2024. So stay tuned for future updates in the coming weeks.]

Speaking of Fincher, that IndieWire interview also reveals that the director has finally begun preliminary work on a new remaster of Panic Room as well. So while a long-awaited Sony 4K release is probably still many months away, at least the process has officially begun.

Also today, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has set Robert Butler’s Turbulence (1997) for 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release on 6/18. The company has also revealed that Luis Buñuel’s Diary of a Chambermaid (1964) and Costa-Gavras’ Music Box (1989) are coming soon to Blu-ray. They’ve just set a double feature Blu-ray of Lewis Milestone’s The North Star (1943) and Armored Attack (1957) for release on 6/18 as well.

Lionsgate and Amazon are now taking pre-orders for Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, and Amazon-exclusive 4K Ultra HD Steelbook (click on the preceding format links for each). Street date is TBA.

Lionsgate and A24 have also listed Alex Garland’s Civil War (2024) for pre-order on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, and Amazon-exclusive 4K. Again, the street date is TBA. The cover artwork and links for those are all available below.

And Amazon is also taking pre-orders on the 4K Ultra HD release of Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Team America: World Police (2004) and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999). Both of those are officially due on 6/25 and will include Dolby Vision HDR. You can see the cover artwork above left and also below.
