Pick-Ups for the Week of June 21, 2016
Welcome to a new edition of Pick-Ups!
Thank you for tuning in. I’m back from a break with some new reviews for you. By the way, did you folks go out and see The Conjuring 2? If you haven’t yet, you’re in for a treat. It’s easily one of the best horror films of the year. And if you’re seeing it at the Alamo Drafthouse, like I did, you’re in for a selection of some nice horror shorts. Definitely go out and see it if you can. [Read on here...]

It’s been a little crazy here the last couple days. Review product for ID4, Star Trek, and Star Trek Into Darkness in 4K Ultra HD has arrived and I’m starting to work on my reviews of each. I’m going to try to post at least one of them today, and maybe another tomorrow. The Martian: Extended Edition should be here early next week, so I’ll get to work on that one too as soon as it comes in.
Meanwhile, we expect to check back in tomorrow with a rare Saturday post featuring a new History, Legacy & Showmanship anniversary retrospective column from our own Michael Coate. So be sure to check back then. [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got a couple things for you today...
First up, as you may have noticed, my review of Fox’s Deadpool on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format went live yesterday afternoon. You can find that here, and I’ll have more on the subject in just a moment. The 4K disc looks and sounds absolutely fantastic, and the included Blu-ray is actually quite a surprisingly nice little special edition too. Don’t miss it.
Also here at the site today, we’ve got a new Blu-ray review from Jim Hemphill, featuring his thoughts on Mike Hodges’ A Prayer for the Dying (1987), now available on disc in HD from Twilight Time. Do check it out. [Read on here…]

I’m working on a few more of those Ultra HD reviews for posting over the next couple days, so today’s update is going to be brief. But we do have a few interesting items for you today...
First up, our own Tim Salmons has just kicked off his latest installments of his Dailies: Pick-Ups column. This week, Tim’s going to catch up with a few great Blu-ray titles from our friends at Arrow Video, the first of which is Buddy Cooper’s The Mutilator (1985). Do give it a look. [Read on here…]
Buster Keaton, Pelham, Journey to Space, Seven Samurai 4K, new Shout, Kino & Olive & MUCH more

Okay, we’re rounding out the week with a little title announcement catch-up. My plan had been to post a new UHD review each day all week, but then of course it became obvious that the Star Wars Blu-ray announcement was about to happen and that threw off the plan, as such things often do. I do have a review of Sony’s 4K UHD Blu-ray of Chappie in the works, which is a true 4K title, and I’ll have that for you Monday. Look for more UHD reviews next week as well.
That said, our own Tim Salmons has just posted a review of one of my favorite films of 2015, Ryan Coogler’s Creed, which is now available on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video. It’s a great film with tons of heart – a Rocky sequel that actually stands on its own beautifully. Stars Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone really shine in it. Do give it a look. Blu-ray News – Peanuts Movie coming to UHD BD, plus reviews of The X-Files: The Complete Seasons 1-9 & more

Today’s post here on The Bits is all about Blu-ray reviews…
First up, I’ve finally posted my in-depth thoughts on Fox’s The X-Files: The Complete Seasons 1-9 Blu-ray box set. And by in-depth, I mean in-depth – it’s a 3-pager with everything you’d want to know about the set, its quality and extras, and word of a Fox exchange program for one of the individual season sets. Do give it a read. If you love the series and are interested in the BDs, the better course is to buy the seasons individually and you’ll save money – I’ve included purchase links to all of them (plus the movies) within the review text. Enjoy! [Read on here…]
