November 17th.

That’s the street date Amazon.ca has now listed for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – Extended Edition on Blu-ray and DVD in Canada at least, but those dates are almost always identical to Warner’s U.S. street dates, so it would seem reasonable to expect 11/17 to be the U.S. date as well. [Read on here…]

We’ve got more interesting Blu-ray and DVD release news for you today…

First, while Warner Home Video hasn’t yet announced the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – Extended Edition yet (tentatively due on either 11/3, 11/10 or 11/17), we do know a few things about the release. First, it’s going to be about 20 minutes longer than the theatrical cut (in the neighborhood of 164 minutes long). Jackson had said previously the extended matertial would be about 30 minutes, but I’ve managed to confirm the 164 minute runtime with sources directly involved at WingNut Films, who tell me that the footage is “significant” and most of it has been added to the battle at the end. Second, it’s going to be screened in theaters in October, as part of a worldwide, week-long The Hobbit: Extended Edition screening event in theaters (you can see the AMC listing here, which includes the 3 hour run time, and The One Ring.net has more here). The Extended Edition of An Unexpected Journey will screen on 10/5, followed by the EE of The Desolation of Smaug on 10/7, and finally the EE or The Battle of the Five Armies on 10/13. Third, we now know that The Battle of the Five Armies – Extended Edition has received an R-rating from the MPAA (more here at Rope of Silicon). We expect an official Blu-ray release announcement from Warner any time now. Of course, we’ll post the details as soon as we have them.  [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got some very cool and interesting release news for you today...

But first, our own Michael Coate has posted a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column featuring a look back at Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief in celebration of the film’s 60th anniversary! He’s got release details, plus a great roundtable interview with film historians John Cork, Steven DeRosa, and Martin Hart. It’s a great read, so don’t miss it.  [Read on here…]

All right, we have a couple bits of news for you today but first this...

Go see Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Seriously, don’t even hesitate. I saw it last night up at the Chinese Theater and Hollywood, and it’s terrific. It’s one of the best spy action thrillers I’ve seen in a long time. Way better than Kingsman, slightly better than the last Mission: Impossible film (Ghost Protocol), and I think better even than some of the recent Bond films. The action, pacing and suspense are all excellent and very old school, there’s good moments of humor, the villain is great, the female lead is great. It’s just a damn fine time at the movies. You’ll really enjoy it, I think. [Read on here…]

Okay, first things first: You may have noticed that we’ve added a new Amazon graphic to The Bits homepage (above right, in the sidebar column). The big news today is that Disney and Marvel have now officially set Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron for Blu-ray 3D Combo, Blu-ray Combo and DVD release on 10/2, with the digital release expected on 9/8. Extras on the Blu-ray seem to still be TBA, but are expected to include audio commentary, deleted scenes, a series or “making of” featurettes, and a gag reel. You can see the regular Blu-ray cover artwork to the left and also below. Blu-ray 3D cover artwork is still TBA.  [Read on here…]

This morning, I had the chance to participate in a virtual roundtable discussion featuring Victor Matsuda, the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Global Promotions Committee Chair, Paul Erickson, Senior Analyst for IHS Technology, and TK Arnold of Home Media Magazine. The session started with a video presentation in which the group discussed the outlook for UHD BD and confirmed that licensing of the format spec is going to begin very soon, which means the first official UHD BD players and movie titles could appear by year’s end.  [Read on here…]
