Blu-ray News – Miyazaki up for pre-order, plus San Andreas, new Fox Cinema Archives titles & DEG update

All right, we have a couple bits of news for you today but first this...

Go see Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Seriously, don’t even hesitate. I saw it last night up at the Chinese Theater and Hollywood, and it’s terrific. It’s one of the best spy action thrillers I’ve seen in a long time. Way better than Kingsman, slightly better than the last Mission: Impossible film (Ghost Protocol), and I think better even than some of the recent Bond films. The action, pacing and suspense are all excellent and very old school, there’s good moments of humor, the villain is great, the female lead is great. It’s just a damn fine time at the movies. Now then, Disney and Studio Ghibli’s The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki Blu-ray box set is now available for pre-order as an Amazon-exclusive due 11/17 (SRP $249.99). Just so you know.

Disney and Pixar have also made Lava, which is the CG-animated short that appears before Inside Out in theaters, available for digital viewing for a limited time on Disney Movies Anywhere app on the iPad and iPhone.

Warner has now officially set San Andreas for Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD on 10/13, with the digital release due on 9/22. The Blu-ray versions will include audio commentary by director Brad Peyton, deleted scenes with director’s commentary, 3 featurettes (San Andreas: The Real Fault Line, Dwayne Johnson to the Rescue, and Scoring the Quake), plus a gag reel and a stunt reel.

Magnolia Home Entertainment has set Nowitzki: The Perfect Shot for Blu-ray and DVD release on 9/29.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios are announcing new Fox Cinema Archives and MGM Limited Edition DVD titles for release this summer, beginning this month. They will include When Legends Die (1972) and Kid Blue (1973) on 7/14, The Culpepper Cattle Co. (1972) and The Games (1970) on 7/21, Dance Macabre (1992) and Hey Babu Riba (1985) on 7/28, Every Breath (1993), Below the Belt (1980), and Madison (2005) on 8/4, The Smokers (2000) and Kissed (1996) on 8/11, and Crack House (1989) and The Falling (1987) on 8/18.

Finally today, the DEG (Digital Entertainment Group) has issued its mid-year 2015 Home Entertainment report with these key findings:

  • Overall electronic sell through (EST) spending rose 20 percent in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2014, exceeding $940 million.
  • Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) continued its steady growth with a nearly 25 percent rise for the first half over the first half of 2014.
  • UltraViolet reports more than 23 million accounts with 140 million movies and television shows in UltraViolet libraries.  (Source: DECE.)
  • Total U.S. home entertainment spending was $8.75 billion for the first half virtually flat over the same period in 2014 and outpacing the box office value on video release by nearly three percentage points.
