We’ve got a new disc review for you all to enjoy today, as well as a much of good announcement news. First the review...

Stephen has taken a look at William Friedkin’s Cruising (1980) in 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video.

And we’ve posted our weekly update of the Release Dates & Artwork section here at The Bits with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover artwork and Amazon pre-order links. Now then, the big news today is that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has officially set the Clint Eastwood films Dirty Harry (1971), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), and Pale Rider (1985) for 4K Ultra HD, 4K Steelbook, and Digital release on 4/29 (a slight change from the 4/15 date listed previously on retail sites). Not as if everyone didn’t already know, but the studio’s press release has just confirmed it. As expected, all three will feature Dolby Atmos audio mixes and HDR10 high dynamic range.

In terms of special features, Dirty Harry (1971) will include two new featurettes (Generations and Dirty Harry and Lensing Justice: The Cinematography of Dirty Harry) as well as the following legacy features: Audio Commentary by Richard Schickel, five featurettes (American Masters Career Retrospective: Clint Eastwood: Out of the Shadows, Clint Eastwood: The Man from Malpaso, Clint Eastwood: A Cinematic Legacy – Fighting for Justice, Dirty Harry’s Way, and Dirty Harry: The Original), and an Interview Gallery (featuring Patricia Clarkson, Joel Cox, Clint Eastwood, Hal Holbrook, Evan Kim, John Milius, Ted Post, Andy Robinson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Robert Urich).

The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) will include two new featurettes as well (An Outlaw and an Antihero and The Cinematography of an Outlaw: Crafting Josie Wales) plus the following legacy features: Audio Commentary by Richard Schickel and four featurettes (Clint Eastwood’s West, Eastwood in Action, Hell Hath No Fury: The Making of The Outlaw Josie Wales, and Clint Eastwood: A Cinematic Legacy – Reinventing the West).

And finally, Pale Rider (1985) will include two new featurettes (The Diary of Sydney Penny: Lessons from the Set and Painting the Preacher: Bruce Surtees and Pale Rider) plus three legacy ones (Clint Eastwood: A Cinematic Legacy – Reinventing Westerns, Eastwood Directs: The Untold Story, and The Eastwood Factor). And finally, Sam Cohen’s take on Gillian Armstrong’s Little Women (1994) in 4K Ultra HD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. [Editor’s Note: There is apparently an audio issue with this disc that’s described in the review. Sony is aware of the problem and investigating. We’ll report back here once they figure it out and launch a disc replacement program.]

There aren’t a lot of new announcements to report today, but Kino Lorber Studio Classics has set Gary Sherman’s Vice Squad (1982) for 4K Ultra HD release on 5/13. [Read on here...]

Now then, in terms of announcements this afternoon, the big news is that Paramount has just set Michael Gracey’s Better Man (2024) for 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray and DVD release on 5/13, with the Digital due to become available tomorrow, 2/11. Extras will include a pair of behind the scenes featurettes, including (Let Me Entertain You: The Making of Better Man and Monkey Business: The VFX). [Read on here...]

Our new disc review for today is none other than Stephen’s look at Wolfgang Petersen’s The NeverEnding Story (1984) in a terrific new 4K Ultra HD Limited Edition box set from our friends at Via Vision’s Imprint Films label. The 5-disc set has been released to honor the film’s 40th anniversary and includes multiple cuts of the film plus the 2024 Life After The NeverEnding Story documentary. And it comes in a package that replicates the book as seen in the film. It’s pretty special, so do give Stephen’s thoughts a look here.

Now then... the big news today is that Severn Films has just announced the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release of two more classic Russ Meyer films, including Motorpsycho (1965) and Up! (1976). Pre-orders start today, with the street date set for 4/29. Each has been scanned from the original camera negatives. Look for HDR10 on the 4K discs with mono audio, plus new and archival special features that include audio commentaries and more.

Shout! Factory has begun announcing its April slate, which will include Chris McKay’s Renfield (2023) in 4K Ultra HD, Paul Briganti’s Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (2023) on Blu-ray, and Mamoru Hosoda’s Summer Wars (2000) on both Blu-ray and 4K Steelbook (the latter for GKids) on 4/1, followed by Carol Frank’s Sorority House Massacre (1986) on 4K + BD on 4/8, Craig Zobel’s The Hunt (2020) on 4K on 4/22, and Peter Hyams’ Timecop (1994) on 4K + Blu-ray on 4/29. An update of our old friend Todd Doogan’s 2010 Blu-ray review of Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo (1961) and Sanjuro (1962) by Tim Salmons, to cover the Criterion Collection’s new 4K Ultra HD release.

And finally today, Dennis’ look at Anand Tucker’s The Critic (2023) on good old fashioned DVD from Greenwich Entertainment and Kino Lorber.

In terms of announcement news this afternoon, the big news is that HBO has made its planned 4K Ultra HD Steelbook Limited Edition re-release of The Last of Us: The Complete First Season official for 3/18, in anticipation of the debut of Season Two on Max in April.

Also, the A24 shop is releasing an exclusive Blu-ray version of Greg Kwedar’s Sing Sing (2023) with an expected street date TBA for March. You can pre-order it here. The disc will include audio commentary with the director, producer, editor, and cinematographer, 2 featurettes (Trust the Process and Sing Sing Correctional Facility Premiere), deleted scenes, and a gallery of behind-the-scenes photography by Greg Kwedar, Dominic León, Daniel Order, and Pat Scola. First, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has officially set Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: Part One (2024) for Blu-ray, DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and 4K Steelbook release on 2/4. The 4K disc will feature Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, and all the SKUs will include over an hour of bonus features, including deleted and extended scenes, audio commentary with the director, a second audio commentary with stars Cynthia Ervio and Ariana Grande, the Making Wicked documentary, and a sing-along viewing option for the film. I’ve just posted my thoughts on Ahsoka: The Complete First Season in 4K Ultra HD Steelbook format from Lucasfilm, which (like all of the latest wave of Disney+ titles, now includes Dolby Vision HDR). And yesterday, I reviewed Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014) in a new 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 4K box set release from Paramount.

Sam has shared his take on Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July (1989) in a new Shout Select Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD release from Shout! Factory.

Dennis has reviewed James Ivory’s Roseland (1977) on Blu-ray from the Cohen Film Collection via Kino Lorber.

And yesterday, Tim posted his look at Arrow’s When Titans Ruled the Earth box set, which includes Louis Letterier’s Clash of the Titans (2010) and Jonathan Liebesman’s Wrath of the Titans (2012) in 4K UHD, as well as Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ Monk: Season Four on Blu-ray.
