An Honor To Be Nominated: A Touch Of Class

(If it can be difficult to remember who won the Academy Award for Best Picture, it’s downright mindbending trying to remember everything else it was up against. In An Honor To Be Nominated, I’ll be taking a look back at some of the movies the Oscar didn’t go to and trying to determine if they were robbed, if the Academy got it right, or if they should ever have been nominated in the first place.) We’ve got a bunch of stuff for you to enjoy here at The Bits today, starting with a trio of new columns here at the site.

First, the good Dr. Jahnke has turned in his latest installment of Burnt Offerings: MOD DVD, running down the latest in small batch, hand crafted DVDs and Blu-rays. He’s also added new component to the column that he’s calling Wide Awake in Streamland, which details worth deep catalog film and TV titles available for streaming via Warner Archive Instant, Netflix, Hulu Plus and the like. Be sure to check it out.

Also today, our own Michael Coate unloads both barrels of his History, Legacy and Showmanship column to celebrate the 50th anniversaries of TV’s Bewitched and the seminal James Bond film Goldfinger! For each column Michael conducts a roundtable discussion with film historians and experts. You definitely don’t want to miss them – here’s the Bewitched piece and here’s Goldfinger. Enjoy!  [Read on here…]

Burnt Offerings for September 16, 2014

We’re going to be trying something a little bit different here at Burnt Offerings starting this week. Don’t worry, we’ll still take a close look at this week’s roundup of MOD releases (and considering the large number of westerns this week, “roundup” is the right word). But afterwards, we’re going to take a quick look at what’s available instantly, at your fingertips, right now on the intertubes in a mini-column-within-a-column I’m calling Wide Awake In Streamland. We’ll get to that in a minute but first, the discs (available for purchase via the banners below, thank you very much indeed).  [Read on here…]

Well… the response to my Star Trek and Blu-ray 4K columns of the past couple days has been very positive and positively overwhelming! I’ve gotten tons of e-mails and messages about both topics and I’m going to do my best to get back to everyone but it might take a few days.

Meanwhile today, the esteemed Dr. Jahnke has reviewed a classic and iconic David Lynch film on Blu-ray from Criterion… the long-awaited Eraserhead. Some of you longtime readers might recall that, ten or fifteen years ago, there was talk of the film coming to Criterion on DVD, but it failed to materialize. It’s now part of the Collection at least and it sounds as if they’ve really hit it out of the park. Don’t miss it.  [Read on here…]

Burnt Offerings for September 9, 2014

We’ve gone through a few quiet (and, indeed, dead) weeks here at Burnt Offerings recently. That all changes today with a bumper crop of new releases from almost all of the studios (except for MGM and, honestly, at this point let’s just stick a fork in them). So let’s take a gander at the latest in MOD and, needless to say, if you choose to buy a couple via the banners below, we’d be much obliged.  [Read on here…]

Burnt Offerings for August 19, 2014

This isn’t a huge week for MOD releases but it’s a good one for fans of 1970s cult cinema. And we’re all fans of 1970s cult cinema around these parts, right? I thought so. Let’s take a look and thank you in advance for assisting The Bits by doing your DVD shopping via the array of buttons you see right… about… here.  [Actually just a little farther. Click here...]

Well… we had a server issue here at The Bits yesterday afternoon that took down the site for most of the day. No worries though: Mr. Scott and the boys down in Engineering got the bugs worked out quickly and all is now well. But it means today’s post is going to be brief.  [Read on here…]
