We’ve got some interesting announcement news for you today...

First up, Paramount has just set Robert Altman’s Popeye (1980) for release on Blu-ray Disc on 12/1, just in time for the film’s 40th anniversary (on 12/6). No kidding! The film stars Robin Williams, Shelley Duvall, Paul L. Smith, and Paul Dooley.

From the press release: “The new Blu-ray includes access to a Digital copy of the film, along with nearly 30 minutes of all-new bonus content featuring excerpts from one of Robin Williams’ final interviews, an interview with director Robert Altman from 2014, as well as a newly conducted interview with Stephen Altman.”

Those extras will include 4 featurettes (Return to Sweethaven: A Look Back with Robin and the Altmans, The Popeye Company Players, Popeye’s Premiere, and The Sailor Man Medleys) and the film’s theatrical trailer. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below. [Read on here...]

Also today, Universal and STX Films have announced the 10/6 Blu-ray and DVD release of Marc Munden’s The Secret Garden. The Digital release is planned for 9/22.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has set Netflix’s animated Green Eggs and Ham: The Complete First Season for DVD release on 12/1, featuring all 13 episodes. The Digital release will be available on 11/10.

Speaking of Warner, we’re hearing from more retail sources that The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Theatrical and Extended) is now listed in the studio’s retailer database for release on 4K Ultra HD in early December (likely 12/1 or 12/8). This suggests that the studio is now more confident that WETA will be able to get the remaster done in time for release before the end of the year. No word yet on whether The Hobbit trilogy will street on the format the same day or follow in early 2021. If the title actually starts to appear on retail websites, you can bet the studio’s official announcement will follow shortly. We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly.

Speaking of 4K, it appears that Akira Kurosawa’s Ran may be coming to 4K Ultra HD, at least down under. The retail site DVD Land has it set for release on the format on 9/23. Click here to check that out. [Editor’s Note: It looks like this may not be real after all. The 4K distribution rights are in the hands of StudioCanal, which had apparently planned a 4K disc release pre-COVID, but it seems to have been delayed or cancelled. So this listing appears to be an error.]

Meanwhile, Bill & Ted Face the Music is now listed as available for pre-order on Blu-ray and DVD on Amazon, but there’s no street date yet listed. In any case, click here for that.

RLJE Films will release The Owners on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/20.

And not only are all of Criterion’s December Blu-ray titles now available for pre-order on Amazon.com, Shout! Factory’s They Live 4K is up, as is Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: The Complete Series & Feature Film Blu-ray set. Click on the images below to pre-order...
