Asteroid City is official for Blu-ray, plus Elemental, School of Rock, Red Dragon 4K, It! The Terror from Beyond Space, The Puppetoon Movie: Volume 3 & more!

We’ve got a quick rundown of release news for you to close out the week today, and some new reviews as well. I suspect some of you are interested in a follow-up to the State of 4K and Physical Media editorial we posted on Wednesday. Rest assured, there will be a follow-up, and I hope to get that posted here sometime next week. So stay tuned.

In the meantime, we have several new disc reviews for you to enjoy this afternoon...

Tim has posted his thoughts on John Hughes’ Weird Science (1985) in 4K Ultra HD from our friends at Arrow Video.

Stephen has shared his take on Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 4 in 4K UHD from Lionsgate, Brian De Palma’s Blow Out (1981) in 4K UHD from Criterion, and also John Henry Johnson’s Curse of the Blue Lights (1990) on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome.

Dennis has delivered a look at Charles Walters’ Dangerous When Wet (1953) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

And Stuart has weighed in with a look at René Clément’s Joy House (1964) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Now then, the big news today is that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has set Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City for Blu-ray and DVD release on 8/15, with the Digital release due next week on 8/11. Extras will include the 4-part The Making of Asteroid City documentary (which includes Desert Town, Doomsday Carnival, Montana and Ranch Hands, and The Players), as well as 2 additional Digital-exclusive features (The Alien and The Roadrunner). Also, Disney and Pixar have officially set the animated Elemental for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 9/26, with the Digital release expected on 8/15. Of note is that fact that the 4K Ultra HD release will be retailer-exclusive. The Disney Movie Club will have a version, Walmart will have a version, and Best Buy will have a Steelbook version. You can see the Blu-ray and DMC 4K SKUs below. Extras on each will include the Carl’s Date short film, 3 featurettes (Ember and Wade, Next Stop: Element City, and Paths to Pixar: The Immigrant Experience), audio commentary with the filmmakers, and 5 deleted scenes with introduction by director Peter Sohn.

Paramount has set Richard Linklater’s School of Rock (2003) for 20th Anniversary Edition Steelbook Blu-ray release on 9/26. You can see the cover art below.

They’ve also announced that Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies – Season One will be available for purchase on 7/24 on Digital only.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has revealed that Brett Ratner’s Silence of the Lambs prequel Red Dragon (2002) will arrive on 4K Ultra HD on 10/24. KLSC will also release Edward L. Cahn’s It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958) on Blu-ray that same day, in honor of the film’s 65th anniversary. Extras will include the tidbITs: Ephemera from Beyond Space featurette, three audio commentaries, and the film’s theatrical trailer.

Our friends at Flicker Alley have set Laurel & Hardy: Year One – The Newly Restored 1927 Silents for Blu-ray release on 9/1. The 2-disc set will feature 13 silent films from 1927, plus two additional films made before the pair were a team. Among them are Lucky Dog (1921), 45 Minutes from Hollywood (1926), Duck Soup (1927), Slipping Wives (1927), Love ‘em and Weep (1927), Why Girls Love Sailors (1927), With Love and Hisses (1927), Sailors, Beware! (1927), Do Detectives Think? (1927), Flying Elephants (1928), Sugar Daddies (1927), The Second 100 Years (1927), Call of the Cuckoo (1927), Putting Pants on Phillip (1927), and The Battle of the Century (1927).

Also, Umbrella Entertainment has announced an interesting October slate of titles, including a Frank Herbert’s Dune & Children of Dune Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set (complete with deluxe packaging and a sandworm GoBricks! replica), Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism (2023) on Blu-ray, and a Possession (1981): Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray release. The exact October street date is TBA.

Lionsgate has released the documentary Black Ice on Digital and VOD today.

The good folks at Arnold Leibovit Entertainment and Puppetoon Productions have revealed that The Puppetoon Movie: Volume 3 – Limited Edition Blu-ray is finally coming on 9/1. This will include the Puppetoon titles Western Daze (1940), The Ballet of Red Radio Valves (1938), Bravo Mr. Strauss (1943), Hotlip Jasper (1945), Together in the Weather (1946), Jasper’s Music Lesson (1943), Rhythm in the Ranks (1941), The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins (1943), The Truck That Flew (1943), Date with Duke (1947), On Parade (1936), The Tool Box (1970), Jasper and the Beanstalk (1945), My Man Jasper (1945), The Sky Princess (1941), Jasper’s Boobytraps (1945), Rhapsody in Wood (1947), Jasper’s Derby (1946), Aladdin and the Magic Lamp (1939), And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street (1944), and Shoe Shine Jasper (1947), as well as the cel-animated titles The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe (1940), The Queen Was in the Parlour (1939), The Good Bear and the Bad Bear (1940), A Fairy Tale About a Melancholic King (1934), Charlie’s World Cruise (1936), Friend in Need (1940), and World’s Greatest Show (1935), plus additional extras.
