Today’s post starts with three new disc reviews, including...

Stuart’s take on the Film Focus: George Peppard box set from Imprint, which includes John Guillermin’s P.J. (1968), George Schaefer’s Pendulum (1969), Sam Wanamaker’s The Executioner (1970), and Richard T. Heffron’s Newman’s Law (1974).

Dennis’ look at Val Guest’s Assignment K (1968), also new on Blu-ray from Imprint.

And finally, Stephen’s thoughts on Vincente Minnelli and Busby Berkeley’s Cabin in the Sky (1943) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

Note that we have lots more new disc reviews on the way, so be sure to watch for them. Also here at The Bits today, we’ve posted a significant update of our 4K Ultra HD Release List with lots of new 4K UHD titles and Amazon links.

And for our Patreon supporters, we’ve recently shared our thoughts on Ron Moore’s Battlestar Galactica and how well the series holds up some fifteen years after it ended its run on the Sci-Fi Channel, along with some preliminary commentary on changes that are brewing within the home entertainment industry, as well as Stephen’s thoughts on the ethics of film alteration and the challenges in determining how films should look on Blu-ray and especially 4K. Supporting The Bits on Patreon is a great way to help us continue our work in service of physical media, and we surely do appreciate it. [Read on here...]

In announcement news today, Disney and Searchlight Pictures have officially set Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated Poor Things (2023) for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/12. The Digital release is expected on 2/27 and there is no physical 4K UHD currently planned. The Blu-ray edition will feature 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, the Possessing Beauty: The Making of Poor Things featurette, and a trio of “Deleted Things” (including Brothel Doctor, Alfie’s Chapter, and Bella’s Notebook). You can see the cover artwork above left and also below.

Paramount has announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of the Paramount+ series Lawmen: Bass Reeves on 4/30.

Speaking of Paramount, we now have a tentative street date for the studio’s new 4K Ultra HD restoration of Alex Proyas’ The Crow (1994)—look for it on 5/7, and likely in Steelbook packaging.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (2006) in 4K Ultra HD Steelbook format, per this listing on Amazon. We don’t yet know the street date, but we expect it to be officially announced soon, given that pre-orders are already live. You can see the cover art below.

Here’s a lovely surprise: Kino Lorber will release Andrei Tarkovsky’s Nostalghia (1983) on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on 4/23 via their Kino Classics line! We would love to see more Tarkovsky films in 4K, so hopefully this is just the first release of several.

And Kino Lorber Studio Classics has revealed that David Twohy’s Below (2002) is “coming soon” in 4K Ultra HD. The company has also confirmed that they’re working on a new Blu-ray release of Christian-Jaque’s The Black Tulip (1964). The street date is TBA.

Also today, several Bits readers have reported to us that Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report (2002) is now available in 4K Ultra HD on Paramount+ and Kaleidescape. This suggests that it should appear on Apple TV+, Vudu, and elsewhere soon, and also strongly suggests that a physical 4K UHD is forthcoming. (It’s hard to imagine a Spielberg film being available in Digital 4K only.)

And international retail sources have hinted that Mercury Studios—which just last week set Mötley Crüe: The End – Live in Los Angeles for 4K Ultra HD release on 4/5—may also be about to release Peter Gabriel: Back to Front – Live in London on 4K Ultra HD. The title has appeared briefly on various retailer sites with cover artwork, before being pulled down again. We’ve asked Mercury for confirmation and hope to hear back from them soon.

Finally today, if any of you are fans of director Christopher Nolan, there’s a great new 4-part interview with him done by Stephen Colbert, host of The Late Show and an all-around super nerd and genre fan. It’s pretty fantastic, focusing on various aspects of Oppenheimer, but also Nolan’s career and filmmaking approach in general. You can watch the first part below (and the other three parts will become available for viewing as you finish each one)…

We’ll leave you with a look at the cover artwork for Poor Things, The Departed, and Nostalghia (with Amazon links if available)...

Poor Things (Blu-ray Disc) The Departed (4K Ultra HD Steelbook) Nostalghia (4K Ultra HD)

Stay tuned!
