Blue Underground sets The Final Countdown 4K for 4/27, plus Kaleidescape movie rentals & more reviews/news

The Final Countdown (4K Ultra HD)

All right, we’re starting things off this week with more new disc reviews. Four of them, in fact...

Tim has posted his thoughts on Billy Wilder’s The Lost Weekend (1945) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, as well as Michel Lemoine’s Seven Women for Satan (1975) on Blu-ray from Mondo Macabro, and John Guillermin’s 1976 remake of King Kong, a Paramount title on Region B-locked Blu-ray from our friends down at Umbrella Entertainment.

And Dennis has turned in his thoughts on The Buster Keaton Collection: Volume 4 on Blu-ray from the Cohen Film Collection, an excellent release that includes Go West (1925) and College (1923).

Now then, the big release news for today is that our friends at Blue Underground have officially set The Final Countdown for release as a 40th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Limited Edition on 4/27. It will include a brand new 16-bit 4K scan and restoration of the original 35mm camera negative. HDR10 and Dolby Vision high dynamic range will be available, as will a new Dolby Atmos sound mix along with the previous DTS-HD Master Audio mix. The first pressing will be a 3-disc set including the film on 4K and Blu-ray, along with the previous Blu-ray extras, the film’s soundtrack on CD, and a collectible booklet: The Zero Pilot Journal. You can see the cover artwork above left and also below, and we’ve updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly. The packaging will also feature a lenticular slipcover.

Also in 4K news today, the BBC will release the David Attenborough documentary series Perfect Planet on 3/30.

In other release news today, Universal has set Let Him Go for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/2, staring Diane Lane and Kevin Costner. The Digital release is available today.

Universal will also release Freaky on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/9.

And Shout! Factory and Major League Baseball have set the official 2020 World Series Collector’s Edition: Los Angeles Dodgers set for Blu-ray and DVD release on 2/9. SRP is $74.98 and $59.98.

In other industry news this afternoon, sources are telling us that Kaleidescape is about to announce that digital movie rentals will soon be available on Kaleidescape Strato systems. These films will be full-resolution downloads, not streams, for maximum quality. Once you start a rental, you’ll have 48 hours to download and view the film. And if you choose to purchase the film within 30 days of the rental, part of the rental price will be credited to the purchase. We expect the full details to be announced shortly.
