All right, we have a bunch of good release news and reviews for you today…

Before we get to it though, a quick personal note: Often, the first place I post breaking news about Blu-ray and 4K (along with other items I find interest in related to film, science, spaceflight, science fiction, etc) is on my personal Twitter page (@BillHuntBits). Now then, let’s get down to business…

First up, though it’s not officially announced yet, we have word from retail and studio sources that Warner’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will street on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 3/12/19. Watch for the official announcement in the weeks ahead.

This one IS officially announced: Warner’s A Star Is Born will street on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/19. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include The Road to Stardom: Making A Star Is Born, 3 Jam Sessions and Rarities (Baby What You Want Me to Do, Midnight Special, and Is That Alright), and 4 Music Videos (Shallow, Always Remember Us This Way, Look What I Found, and I’ll Never Love Again). We start today with a pair of new Blu-ray reviews, including Tim’s take on John Waters’ Female Trouble from the Criterion Collection, and also Dennis’ look at The Nun from Warner. More reviews are on the way this week and next, including (next week) several new 4K reviews from myself. Among them will be M:I – Fallout and The Lion King. My wife and I have family visiting here at the moment though, so it’s been tough to break away to do the reviews with the justice they deserve.

The BIG announcement news today is that Universal has officially set Damien Chazelle’s First Man for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 1/22, with the Digital release expected on 1/5. Here’s the great news... while the film is presented in its original 2.40:1 theatrical aspect ratio, the final scenes will be presented in full 1.78:1 to preserve the IMAX aspect as seen in theaters. Audio is English Dolby Atmos and the 4K image will include both HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include feature commentary (with director Damien Chazelle, screenwriter Josh Singer, and editor Tom Cross), deleted scenes, and 8 featurettes (including Shooting for the Moon, Preparing to Launch, Giant Leap in One Small Step, Mission Gone Wrong, Putting You in the Seat, Recreating the Moon Landing, Shooting at NASA, and Astronaut Training). This is certainly the 4K Ultra HD I’m most looking forward to right now here at The Bits. It should be terrific. [Read on here...]

We’ve got a bunch more new Blu-ray reviews for you to check out today, including Tim’s take on Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete Collection from Starz and Lionsgate, Single White Female from Scream Factory, and the Zombie: Limited Edition from Blue Underground, David’s look at The Bravados from Twilight Time and The Satanic Rites of Dracula from Warner Archive, and finally Dr. Adam Jahnke’s updated look at Trick ’r Treat from Scream Factory.

We’ve got a quick news update for you today, starting with word that Sony’s Venom – which as we’ve revealed streets on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/18 (with the digital release due on 12/11) – will include a Venom Mode pop-up trivia option, 3 deleted and extended scenes, 5 featurettes (From Symbiote to Screen, The Lethal Protector in Action, Venom Vision, Designing Venom, and Symbiote Secrets), 8 Pre-Vis sequences, the Sunflower music video (by Post Malone and Swae Lee), and a sneak peek of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Audio on the 4K version at least will include Dolby Atmos, with HDR10 high dynamic range. [Read on here...]

Hey guys... we’re working on a last few server upgrades here at the site today, so today’s update isn’t going to be a big one. But we do have something important we wanted to share...

First though, we’ve posted our review of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s new Superman: The Movie in 4K Ultra HD, which streets today. The film has quite simply never looked better than it does here in 4K, but it still looks like a film from 1978 shot with diffusion filters, so I have a feeling this is one title the longtime fans and true cinephiles are going to appreciate more than the average 4K consumer who may be just chasing pixel counts. In any case, enjoy the review.

Don’t forget, reviews of 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, and The Matrix Trilogy in 4K Ultra HD are all up here at the site now, along with our review of Batman: The Animated Series on Blu-ray. More reviews are on the way later this week. [Read on here...]

All right, while it hasn’t yet officially been announced by Disney, we expect that to happen very soon. So the big story today is that Disney will be releasing its animated feature The Lion King on 4K Ultra HD on 12/4. The title is already listed on Best Buy Canada and we expect it to appear elsewhere soon. Meanwhile, here’s a look at the official cover artwork (at left).

Also today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the 11/20 Blu-ray release of Robin and Marian (1976), directed by Richard Lester (A Hard Day’s Night, Superman II) and starring Sean Connery (as Robin Hood) and Audrey Hepburn (as Lady Marian).

MPI is releasing Fyodor Bondarchuk’s 2017 Russian science-fiction epic Attraction (aka Prityazhenie) on Blu-ray and DVD on 12/4. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Fyodor is the son of the legendary Russian filmmaker Sergei Bondarchuk (War and Peace). We’ve been wanting to get a look at this film for a while, so we’re thrilled to see it finally coming in the States. [Read on here...]

First up today, in honor of Global Bond Day, our own Michael Coate has posted a new History, Legacy & Showmanship retrospective, looking back at Sean Connery’s last turn as 007 in Never Say Never Again. The piece features another great roundtable discussion with film historians, so enjoy!

We also have four more Blu-ray reviews for you to check out today, including Tim’s take on Russell Mulcahy’s Razorback (1984) from Umbrella Entertainment, David’s look at Sunset Society (2018) from MVD Visual and John Cassavetes’s Gloria (1980) from Twilight Time, and Dennis’ thoughts on Television’s Lost Classics: Volume One from VCI. In news today, we have more word from retailers that Disney is going to be bringing The Lion King to 4K UHD by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Wreck-It Ralph has now appeared for 4K UHD pre-order on Best Buy with a street date of 11/6, the same day as The Incredibles 2. [Read on here...]

We’ve got a bunch of news for you today, including Blu-ray and 4K items of interest. But we’re going to start with some new disc reviews we’ve done over the last couple of days for you...

First up, I’ve posted my in-depth looks at John Carpenter’s original Halloween in 4K from Lionsgate, as well as The Sum of All Fears and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit in 4K, which completes our look at the full Jack Ryan 5-Film Collection 4K box set from Paramount. Halloween features a fantastic new 4K film scan approved by both Carpenter and cinematographer Dean Cundy, but the audio options are the same as the 35th Anniversary Blu-ray (which means the mono is not original theatrical).

I’m also currently working on a review of Fox’s The X-Men Trilogy in 4K, as well as the Universal Classic Monsters Complete 30-Film Collection, The Invisible Man: Complete Legacy Collection, and Creature from the Black Lagoon: Complete Legacy Collection all on Blu-ray. And yes, I am attempting to ascertain when fixed discs will be available for sale (the sets are not currently available directly from Amazon) and how you’ll be able to tell that you have the fixed discs via the packaging.
