This is just a quick Super Bowl Sunday post here to bring you news that Best Buy is now running ads that reveal the street date for Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD. The date is 3/27, just as we’ve said here at The Bits for weeks now. It seems reasonable to assume that the official announcement by the studio is close, so stay tuned.

Now then, we’ve got more release news for you today…

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just announced Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour for Blu-ray and DVD release on 2/27, with the Digital release set for 2/6. There is no 4K Ultra HD release currently planned. Extras will include audio commentary by Wright and two featurettes (Into Darkest Hour and Gary Oldman: Becoming Churchill). As some of you know, this film was just nominated for Best Picture in the forthcoming Academy Awards and Oldman was nominated for Best Actor. You can see the cover artwork at left and below. We’re starting the day with a new Blu-ray review from our own Tim Salmons, who takes look at Antonio Margheriti’s Yor, the Hunter from the Future: 35th Anniversary Edition from Mill Creek Entertainment. The title streeted last Tuesday and is now available. You can read that here.

In release news today, Amazon is now taking pre-orders on 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s The X-Files: The Complete Season 11 on Blu-ray and DVD ($29.99 and $19.99). Street date is still TBA.

Our friends over at Twilight Time have announced their April Blu-ray release slate, which is set to include Paul Schrader’s Auto Focus (2002), Philip Dunne’s Blue Denim (1959), Jacques Demy’s Model Shop (1969), and Martin Ritt’s No Down Payment (1957). [Read on here…]

We’re closing out the week today with another pair of new Blu-ray reviews from Tim, including JD’s Revenge from Arrow Video and also Attack Force Z from Umbrella Entertainment. Do give them a look.

In announcement news today, Lionsgate has set Hèctor Hernández Vicens’s Day of the Dead: Bloodline for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/6.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has revealed that it will release Topaze (1933) on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/6. Extras will include audio commentary by film historian Kit Ellinger and a trailer. Better still, Kino will release a The Lion in Winter: 50th Anniversary Edition (1968) on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/13, mastered from a 2016 4K restoration, featuring audio commentary by director Anthony Harvey, an interview with sound recordist Simon Kaye, both 5.1 and 2.0 audio, and the trailer. Meanwhile, the big news today is that Criterion has just announced their April Blu-ray release slate, which is set to include Leo McCarey’s The Awful Truth (Cat #917 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Sergei Parajanov’s The Color of Pomegranates (Cat #918 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/17, and Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides (Cat #920 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Jim Jaramusch’s Dead Man (Cat #919 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/24. They’re also releasing Eclipse Series 46: Ingrid Bergman’s Swedish Years on DVD on 4/10, including The Count of the Old Town (1935), Dollar (1938), Intermezzo (1936), Walpurgis Night (1935), A Woman’s Face (1938), and June Night (1940). All right, we’re wrapping up the week with a big title announcement and additional release news, some new disc reviews, and a few words about HDR. But first, those reviews...

Tim has just turned in his thoughts on a trio of great new Blu-ray titles, including MVD’s The Man from Earth: Special Edition, Warner Archive’s The Green Slime, and Synapse’s Suspiria: 40th Anniversary Edition Steelbook. All three packages are quite good and well worth a look, so do check them out when you have time.

Now then... let’s have that big title news: Disney and Pixar have just announced Coco for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/27, with the digital and Movies Anywhere release expected on 2/13. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release will feature HDR10 and Dolby Atmos audio, while the 4K digital release will feature HDR10 or Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos audio. The Blu-ray will feature English 7.1 DTS-HD MA. [Read on here…]

As planned, my old friend Robert Meyer Burnett and I – joined by our significant others – saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi last night here in fiery SoCal. In Dolby Cinema no less, which is a helluva great way to see a film, let me tell you. We had absolutely perfect reclining seats, bright and vibrant laser projection, and Atmos sound to shake our backsides. And a good time was had by all, as you can see by the pictures.

But looking around on social media today, I’m struck by this thought: I kinda miss the days when people could just watch a movie. Seems to me, we used to know how to do that without all the handwringing and chest-puffery and whatnot. This is Star Wars, after all… not the Allied plans for the invasion of Normandy. Afternoon, everyone! All right, we have more big news to report for you today...

The Walt Disney Company has just reached a deal to purchase 20th Century Fox and all related entertainment assets from Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox for a deal reportedly worth in the neighborhood $68 billion. Yes, that includes the rights to the original Star Wars films. 21st Century Fox will retain Fox Broadcasting, Fox Sports, Fox News, and all the Fox TV stations, along with the actual 20th Century Fox studio lot in Century City. Now... with this news breaking, naturally the first question movie fans want to know is: Does this mean the original Star Wars is finally going to be released on disc. And the answer is: Cool your thrusters, Space Cowboys. [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got a couple good items of business for you today, the first of which is a new 4K review…

I’ve just given Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar a look on 4K Ultra HD from Paramount. The disc streets next Tuesday, 12/19. It’s a full native 4K transfer and of course the film was shot in a combination of 35 mm and 65 mm IMAX, so it’s variable aspect ratio and looks tremendous. The disc will also appear in Warner’s Christopher Nolan Collection 4K box set which streets next Tuesday as well. We don’t yet have the whole box, but as soon as we do, rest assured we’ll get the other films reviewed for you guys as soon as possible.
