We begin today with Tim’s last Pick-Ups Blu-ray review for this week: A look at Scream Factory’s The Curse/The Curse II: The Bite. Together, these two Z-grade flix were damn near enough to finally break our man’s sanity and send him into a late night reviewing rage (a genuine occupational hazard in this profession). Do check it out. LOL.
Meanwhile, Scream Factory has revealed that it’s working on Brian DePalma’s Raising Cain: Collector’s Edition, due on Blu-ray 6/28, along with a new Blu-ray edition of The Crush on 6/21. [Read on here…]

First things first today: We’re hearing from readers that Samsung’s UBD‑K8500 UHD Blu-ray player is now starting to appear for sale on retailer shelves – including Best Buy – in at least some places around the country. Additionally, Best Buy employees are suggesting in-store that the first UHD Blu-ray titles will start to become available tomorrow (2/11), probably from Lionsgate but maybe also from Fox.
Meanwhile, I’ve now received word from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment that the studio’s first round of UHD Blu-ray titles, including The Martian, Kingsman, Exodus, and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, will officially be available starting on Sunday 2/14 at Best Buy stores. Note, however, that it’s possible some stores will begin selling them earlier, or that some stores will not have their stock in yet by then. [Read on here…]

Okay... we’re starting a new week with a new Tim Salmons column, featuring this year’s Halloween Hangover “leftovers”. Each day this week, Tim will be posting another Blu-ray review – just a few good titles that either came in too late to be part of the regular Hangover, or that didn’t make the cut for one reason or another. Today’s is a look at Twilight Time’s Count Yorga, Vampire. Do check it out. [Read on here…]

All right, sorry for the lack of an update yesterday. As it happens, I was up at bustling Ares Studios, where pre-production on the Axanar feature film is well underway. As some of you may know, I’m the co-writer of the film’s screenplay, so we were having script and production meetings, and then producer Alec Peters, director Robert Meyer Burnett and I recorded a podcast in which we discussed the script and the writing process, and then talked about what makes a great Star Trek film. That should be up in the next day or two, so I’ll be sure to post a link when you can all listen.
Anyway, the big news today is that Criterion has just announced their December slate of Blu-ray and DVD titles, which is set to include Michael Ritchie’s Downhill Racer (Spine #494 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 12/1, Ted Wilde’s Speedy (Spine #788 – Blu-ray, DVD and Hulu) and Takashi Murakami’s Jellyfish Eyes (Spine #787 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 12/8, and finally Howard Brookner’s Burroughs: The Movie (Spine #789 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 12/15. You can see the cover artwork below. [Read on here…]

We have just a quick update for you this afternoon, as we’re doing a little server work here today.
We’re pleased to present a pair of new Blu-ray reviews for you all to enjoy. First, our own Joe Marchese has turned in a look at Kino Lorber’s recent BD edition of Hal Walker’s At War with the Army (1950), starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Also today, Doogan has taken a nice deep dive into P.T. Anderson’s fascinating Inherent Vice – now on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video – and found it worthy of your time. Enjoy the reviews! We’re back… rested, recouped, and ready to get back to business! For the record, my wife and I had a great time celebrating our anniversary early. So thanks for your patience.
It’s going to take a few days to get caught up on all the release news and whatnot, so I’ll get started with that in a moment.
First though, Tim Salmons has checked in with his thoughts on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) on Blu-ray. As you know, the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture while we were away. Just as a heads-up, we’ve got many more new BD reviews coming over the next several days, so be sure stay tuned for them. [Read on here…]

Well… the response to my Star Trek and Blu-ray 4K columns of the past couple days has been very positive and positively overwhelming! I’ve gotten tons of e-mails and messages about both topics and I’m going to do my best to get back to everyone but it might take a few days.
Meanwhile today, the esteemed Dr. Jahnke has reviewed a classic and iconic David Lynch film on Blu-ray from Criterion… the long-awaited Eraserhead. Some of you longtime readers might recall that, ten or fifteen years ago, there was talk of the film coming to Criterion on DVD, but it failed to materialize. It’s now part of the Collection at least and it sounds as if they’ve really hit it out of the park. Don’t miss it. [Read on here…]

First up today, a quick side note: Our own Tim Salmons has turned in a review of Criterion’s Judex on Blu-ray, a French crime film from 1963 that’s actually an homage to a 1916 silent film of the same name. It’s a gorgeous B&W classic from director Georges Franju. Don’t miss it.
Now then… I promised you guys a Star Trek TV on Blu-ray post. [Read on here…]

We’ve got a lot for you today here at The Bits, starting with a pair of regular columns: Todd Doogan’s Doogan’s Queue (which runs down this week’s latest releases on Blu-ray and DVD) and Adam Jahnke’s Burnt Offerings: MOD DVD (which looks at the latest deep catalog BD & DVD titles available from Warner Archive, Sony Picture Choice, and the Universal Vault). We’ve got a couple of interesting pieces of announcement news to report today, and then I have some thoughts on the recent news about Blu-ray 4K. So let’s get to it. First up, the announcement news…
Lionsgate has just set A Most Wanted Man for Blu-ray and DVD release on 11/4 (SRP $29.99 and $26.98), with a digital release on 10/28. Extras will include a pair of featurettes (The Making of A Most Wanted Man and Spymaster: John le Carré in Hamburg). [Read on here…]
