We’re going to have a new Michael Coate retrospective today in his History, Legacy & Showmanship column here at The Bits, looking back at Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in honor of yesterday’s 20th anniversary for the film. That will be up later this afternoon, so be sure to watch for it.

In the meantime, we have a bit of 4K and standard Blu-ray news to report...

First up, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has set Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me for release on 4K Ultra HD on 8/27. Scanned from the original camera negative, the film will be presented with a new Dolby Atmos mix, along with the original theatrical mono audio and the previous 5.1 remix. Extras on the 4K disc will include never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes. The package will also include the previous Blu-ray with picture-in-picture video commentary with Reiner and the cast, the Walking the Tracks: The Summer of Stand by Me documentary, and audio commentary with Reiner. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just officially confirmed information we’ve had in our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits for a while now, which is this…

Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) and Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997) are officially coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Digital on 6/4. You’ll be able to buy them as single SKU editions that day, and then a 4K Batman Anthology box set will follow on 9/17.

The films have been scanned from the original camera negatives in native 4K, fully remastered, and graded for high dynamic range in HDR10 (there is no mention of Dolby Vision but we’ll try to confirm its inclusion). They’ll also feature new Dolby Atmos audio mixes. [Read on here...]

Heads-up: Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger appears to be coming to 4K Ultra HD on 2/26, per Best Buy pre-order listings. The retailer currently has listings for the title in SKUs with regular and Steelbook packaging.

The film has a 2K DI. It’s possible there could be a new Dolby Atmos audio mix, but as has recently been the case with Disney 4K releases, look for Dolby Vision HDR on the digital version only.

It should be noted that 2/26 is the same street date as their already announced The Little Mermaid and Ralph Breaks the Internet 4K releases, both of which will also have Steelbook SKUs at Best Buy.

Meanwhile, we have one other 4K-related item to report today: Some of you have noticed that there’s been an image circulating around the Internet over the past few days purporting to show an exclusive 4K release of the Indiana Jones films in China. Our studio sources tell us this is bogus. There are no plans at this time. We take that to mean not never, but not anytime soon. Adjust your plans accordingly.

Have a great weekend and we’ll see you with a full news update on Monday.

Stay tuned...!

All right, we’ve checked in with our retail and industry sources and have learned that Marvel and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s wildly popular animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is likely to street on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 3/19.

As you know, the film has just been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature Film category (and is very likely to be the leading contender). We haven’t been able to confirm the production and finish resolution of the film, so we don’t know if the animation was rendered natively at 2K or 4K. Either way, with its bright color palette and unique comic-panel texturing, it should look amazing on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD.

It’s reasonable to assume you’ll get at least Dolby Atmos audio. Sony doesn’t typically include Dolby Vision HDR on their 4K releases though, so expect HDR10.

Amazon is showing Blu-ray, Blu-ray “Limited Edition”, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD SKUs. We don’t know of any other retailer-exclusive versions, but we’ll have to wait until the title is officially announced.

FYI, it appears that Universal’s planned street date for M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K is 4/16.

And we believe Pet Sematary (1989) is coming to 4K from Paramount on 3/26.

Both of those dates are yet to be confirmed with our sources.

Stay tuned...!

We’re kicking things off with a trio of additional Blu-ray reviews, including Dennis’ take on Deadbeat at Dawn from Arrow, Tim’s look at Torso, also from Arrow, and David’s thoughts on The Last Hurrah from Twilight Time.

We’ve also got a bit of new announcement news for you...

First, Paramount has just officially announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Cloverfield Paradox on 2/5. This has, up until now, been a Netflix exclusive. The film will include Dolby Atmos audio and two featurettes, Things Are Not as They Appear: The Making of The Cloverfield Paradox and Shepard Team: The Cast.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has just set The Hate U Give for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 1/22. Extras will include audio commentary (by George Tillman, Jr., Amandla Stenberg, Russell Hornsby, Angie Thomas, and Craig Hayes), 3 extended scenes, and 6 featurettes. Audio is 7.1 DTS-HD MA on the Blu-ray editions. [Read on here...]

All right, today is kind of a big day on the 4K Ultra HD announcement front, so let’s get right to it...

First up, Disney and Marvel have just officially confirmed that Avengers: Infinity War will street on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 8/14 – just as we predicted – with the Digital release planned for 7/31. You’ll get over two hours worth of extras, including featurettes, a gag reel, deleted scenes, and audio commentary with the filmmakers. The Digital edition will include an exclusive 30-minute roundtable with MCU directors Joe and Anthony Russo, James Gunn, Ryan Coogler, Peyton Reed, Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon, and Taika Waititi. You can see the official cover artwork at left and also below.

Also, you know how we’ve been telling you since April that Disney and Marvel would be releasing The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron on 4K Ultra HD concurrently with Infinity War on 8/14? Sure enough... both Zavvi and Best Buy have now begun taking pre-orders for them. Consider them confirmed and you can see the official cover artwork below. [Editor’s Note: Disney has now officially confirmed the 8/14 4K Ultra HD release of The Avengers and The Avengers: Age of Ultron with The Avengers: Infinity War. Audio is confirmed to be Dolby Atmos on all three. Waiting to hear back on HDR.] [Read on here...]

All right, the big news today is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has set Tomb Raider (2018) for release on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 6/12, with the Digital release expected on 5/29. The 4K disc will feature both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, and the film was finished as a 4K Digital Intermediate. Extras will include 4 featurettes (Tomb Raider: Uncovered, Croft Training, Breaking Down the Rapids, and Lara Croft: Evolution of an Icon). We’ve updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly. You can see the cover artwork to the left and also below. We’ll add the Blu-ray 3D cover artwork as soon as we have it.

By the way, we’ve also updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List with new information from retail and industry sources, which suggest that Avengers: Infinity War will be an August release. Also, Disney MAY be planning to release Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron on 4K with it. Paramount is releasing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on 7/17. Universal is working on Deer Hunter for July. Warner appears to be prepping The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions to follow the original film to 4K late this year. And finally, Sony may be prepping Panic Room for release on BD and 4K this year. As always, we caution you to consider all of this information Rumor Mill-worthy until the studios make official announcements.

One last 4K note: We expect to have our hands on Paramount’s Braveheart and Gladiator, along with Warner’s The Matrix, on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray by the end of the week or early next. Rest assured, we’ll get in-depth reviews up here at The Bits as soon as they come in. [Read on here...]

We don’t have a street date yet, but a number of international retailers – including Zavvi – are already taking pre-orders on the title. We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List accordingly.
