While I’m gathering my final thoughts on my experience of Ultra HD Blu-ray at CES 2016 last week (to wrap up our coverage of the convention), I wanted to jump in quickly today to take care of a couple important pieces of business here at The Bits.
First, our own Tim Salmons has turned in his thoughts on Arrow Video’s new Blood Rage: Special Edition Blu-ray.
I’ve also just posted my in-depth review of Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which streets tomorrow on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, and DVD. The film just took home the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical Film of all things. Don’t miss it. [Read on here…]

Well... we’re kicking off a new week here today and this is a big one: The first full trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII is going to be unveiled at Star Wars Celebration on Thursday, ahead of its public debut attached to Avengers: Age of Ultron later this month. We don’t know if the trailer will be released online before then, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Here at The Bits today, we’ve got a new Blu-ray review for you. Todd Doogan has given Grindhouse Releasing’s new 3-disc Blu-ray edition of Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond (1981) a look for you. Sounds like the set is absolutely loaded with great content. Also, our own Joe Marchese turned in a look at Twilight Time’s new BD of Stormy Weather (1943) on Friday, in case you missed it. We’re working on more BD reviews over the next few days, so be sure to check back. [Read on here…]

We’ve got some big title announcements to catch you up on today...
First up, Disney, Fox and Lucasfilm have announced that Star Wars: The Digital Movie Collection will be available for download on Amazon, iTunes and elsewhere starting this Friday, 4/10 (SRP $89.99). For that price, you’ll get all six Star Wars films (the Original Trilogy is confirmed to be the same versions as were on the Blu-ray release) along with both new and legacy bonus material that varies by retailer. The legacy content is taken from the most recent BD releases. However, the new content includes 6 Conversations featurettes (Doug Chiang Looks Back, Sounds in Space, The Star Wars That Almost Was, Creating a Universe, The Lost Interviews, and The Effects) and 6 Discoveries from Inside featurettes (Models & Miniatures, Costumes Revealed, Hologram & Bloopers, Weapons & The First Lightsaber, Matte Paintings Unveiled, and The Sounds of Ben Burtt). Fast & Furious 6, Following, Fox “Your Choice” Classics - Carmen Jones & MUCH more!
Today’s Oktoberfest review pits the good Dr. Jahnke against Kurt Neumann’s 1958 version of The Fly, now available on Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. The take-away lesson: never play with unlicensed “disintegration/re-integration” machines. Gotta love Vincent Price!
In announcement news today, the big news is that Universal has officially set Fast & Furious 6 for Blu-ray and DVD release on 12/10. The Blu-ray will exclusively include an extended version of the film, the Take Control viewing mode featuring the director and cast, the 4-part Planes, Tanks and Automobiles documentary (includes The London Chase, Highway Heist: The Convoy Attack, The Antonov Takedown and Dom and Letty Race Again) and 3 additional featurettes (Gearhead’s Delight, The FLIP Car and Hand-to-Hand Fury). In addition to this, both the Blu-ray and DVD will include deleted scenes, feature commentary with director Justin Lin, the On the Set with Vin featurette and the 4-part The Making of Fast & Furious 6 documentary (including The Fastest of Them All, Reuniting the Team, Letty’s Return and The Mastermind and The Mole).
