Review
Thanks to a financially successful crowdfunding campaign and taking three years to complete, the sequel to 2001’s Super Troopers, simply titled Super Troopers 2, features the Broken Lizard comedy team, consisting of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske, up to their old tricks again.
In Super Troopers 2, Vermont highway patrolmen Thorny (Chandrasekhar), Foster (Soter), Mac (Lemma), Rabbit (Stolhanske), Rod (Heffernan), and captain John Hagan (Brian Cox) are sent to Canada to replace Mounties due to a land dispute on the Canadian border which is now being claimed to be a part of the United States. While there, they get into plenty of mischief with the locals, including a mayor named Guy Le Franc (Rob Lowe) and U.S./Canadian relations go-between named Genevieve Abouis (Emmanuelle Chriqui). Working to make the border look “American”, they stumble upon a drug smuggling operation, of which they embark upon a mission to find out who’s behind it.
Super Troopers 2 is a silly, laugh out loud comedy, filled with levity and hilarity from start to finish. It’s also overloaded with raunchy, vulgar humor about sex, drugs, and other obscure delights. There are also plenty of jokes aimed at both America and Canada. The film never takes itself seriously for even for a second. Just as funny, if not funnier, are the outtakes during the end credits. The performances from the entire cast are outstanding and you can tell they were all having fun making the film. In addition to the regular cast, Super Troopers 2 boasts a few big name stars from the past, such as Lynda Carter, appearing in a cameo as the governor of Vermont, and Fred Savage as himself.
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment presents Super Troopers 2 on Blu-ray with enough great image quality to make it a superior release. Colors look spectacular, well-polished, and highly detailed, with reds and greens looking especially sharp. The outdoor scenery also looks fantastic with beautiful blue skies and lovely terrain. In the audio department, there’s an English 5.1 DTS-HD track and it’s flawless. Dialogue and sound effects are lively throughout without being too soft or overwhelmingly loud. Also included is an English 5.1 Dolby Digital Descriptive audio track, as well as French and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital options. English SDH, English, French, and Spanish subtitles are also included.
There are some excellent supplemental materials as well. Making Super Troopers 2 features 40 minutes of behind the scenes footage, including documentation and information about the Indiegogo campaign that funded the film; a set of extended and deleted scenes, which run for about 20 minutes; Kevin Heffernan: Method Actor, a 2-minute interview; a set of theatrical trailers; and a DVD copy of the film.
Super Troopers 2, despite being downright goofy and corny, is also a fun film to sit through when you need a good laugh. 20th Century Fox has given it a visually pristine release in high definition, making the viewing experience that much more enjoyable. Highly recommended!
