Welcome to the first full week of December, Bits readers!

We’ve got a couple interesting items to report here today, but first a pair of new disc reviews:

I’ve turned in my thoughts on Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994) in 4K Ultra HD from Miramax, via Paramount. The good news is, whether you buy the Steelbook or the regular Amaray version, the 4K remastering is fantastic. Fans should be very pleased.

I’ve also reviewed Andrew Stanton’s CG-animated classic WALL•E (2008) in 4K UHD from Pixar via the Criterion Collection. The highlight here is that it’s a terrific package and the film looks and sounds great, but the new 4K presentation isn’t really dramatically different than the previous Disney 4K edition—it simply now adds HDR10+ and Dolby Vision metadata. But some of the new special features are wonderful.

More new Blu-ray and 4K UHD reviews are coming soon, as always, so please keep checking back for them! [Read on here...]

Now then, in announcement news today, our friends at Kino Lorber Studio Classics have revealed several great new titles for release in February, including Buzz Kulik’s The Hunter (1980) on Blu-ray on 2/21, and Joseph McGrath’s The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom (1968) and Mathieu Kassovitz’s The Crimson Rivers (2000) on Blu-ray, and also John Schlesinger’s Marathon Man (1976) on 4K Ultra HD, all on 2/28. The latter will have a new Dolby Vision HDR grade. Also revealed as coming in 2023 to Blu-ray are Edward Dmytryk’s The Carpetbaggers (1964) and Tom Gries’ Will Penny (1968).

And the big news today is that Shout! Factory and Scream have just revealed their February 2023 slate of Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD titles, and there are some real gems as always. It starts with no less than SIX new 4K Ultra HD catalog titles, including Don Coscarelli’s Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) on 2/7, John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven (1960) and a double-feature of Amy Holden Jones’ The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) and Deborah Brock’s Slumber Party Massacre II (1987), and Rob Cohen’s Dragonheart (1996) on 2/21, as well as Laika’s CG-animated Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) and The Boxtrolls (2014) on 2/28. The latter two will be available in both Amaray and Steelbook packaging. You can see the cover artwork for all of these below, and of course we’ve added all the titles to our 4K UHD Release List here at The Bits accordingly.

As for the other Shout! and Scream Blu-ray titles coming in February, look for Kamen Rider Ryuki: The Complete Series (2002) on 2/7, Zu Warriors From The Magic Mountain (1983), Shepherd: The Story of a Hero Dog (2023), and Iron Monkey (1993) on 2/14, and Giovanni’s Island (2017) on 2/21. And on DVD, look for a When Calls The Heart: Springtime in Hope Valley 4-Film Collection and Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger: The Complete Series (2004) on 2/14, as well as a double feature of Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver (2018) and Jim Button and the Wild 13 (2020) on 2/28.

And finally this afternoon, Criterion has just kicked off their annual 30% off December holiday sale on their own webstore. So be sure to check that out. The sale runs until 12/18.

We’ll leave you today with a look at the cover artwork for Shout! and Scream’s new February 4K UHD titles, all of which are now available for pre-order on Amazon by clicking on the covers (and remember that doing so helps to support our work here at The Bits and we really appreciate it)...
