Now then... there’s not a lot of announcement news to report today, but we do have a few odds and ends for you...
First, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has confirmed the 1/11/22 release of The Great Escape (1963) in 4K Ultra HD. The actual 4K disc will include a new audio commentary by filmmaker/historian Steve Mitchell and Combat Films: American Realism author Steven Jay Rubin, along with the legacy commentary with director John Sturges, actors James Garner, James Coburn, Donald Pleasence, David McCallum, Jud Taylor and other crew members (moderated by Steven Jay Rubin). Audio will include 5.1 surround and the original 2.0 mono. All of the above will be contained on a UHD 100 disc, so the image will have plenty of room to breathe. Plus you’ll get a Blu-ray disc with lots of legacy extras. You can see the cover artwork above left.
By the way, KLSC also has the great John le Carré adaptation Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) listed as “coming soon” to 4K Ultra HD, so we can look forward to that early next year. And while we’re on the topic, this will be a StudioCanal 4K title in the UK on 12/6.
Warner and DC have set the DC animated movie Catwoman: Hunted for release on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on 2/8/22.
The Warner Archive Collection has begun to reveal its December Blu-ray slate, which so far will include Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe (1952) on 12/14 and Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) on 12/7.
Three new Twilight Time labeled Blu-ray titles are expected on 12/14, including The Man from Hong Kong (1975), We of the Never Never (1982), and Seven Deaths in the Cat’s Eyes (1973).
Universal has set The Card Counter for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 12/14.
AMC’s Creepshow: Season 2 will street on Blu-ray and DVD on 12/7.
And Adult Swim has set Rick and Morty: The Complete Fifth Season for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 12/7 as well.
Also today, Barnes and Noble and Criterion have kicked off another month-long 50% off sale. There are lots of great upcoming Blu-ray and 4K titles from The Criterion Collection, so be sure to take advantage of that if you’re interested. The sale runs until 11/29.
Finally, on a completely different note, a friend of Tim’s has published a fun Halloween-themed book for kids. It’s called The Year Without Halloween, and it’s written by Shane Bitterling and illustrated by Walid Atshe. It’s pretty cute, so if you have kids you might want to give it a look. You can get it now on Amazon here for just $13...
All right, we’ll leave you with a look at the cover artwork for a few of the titles mentioned above and more, with Amazon.com pre-order links if available...
And with that, we wish you all a very happy Halloween weekend! Be sure to check back on Sunday for that Universal Monsters 4K review.
Stay tuned...
