Criterion’s January includes Breakfast Club, plus Blade Runner: 2049 pre-orders, Twilight, Olive & more

Morning, folks. We’re going to be working on more reviews here at The Bits today, but we do have some interesting release news to report for you before we get started on those.

First, it appears that whatever was going on to delay the Amazon pre-orders for upcoming 4K titles from Warner seems to have been resolved. You can now pre-order Blade Runner: 2049 on 4K (and also Blu-ray – keep in mind the title hasn’t officially been announced, so there’s no street date yet and we don’t know if there will be the 3D and deluxe SKUs in the US) and also Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – one of the four remaining Potter titles due on 11/7. We expect the others to appear soon and we’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List too. [Read on here…]

In announcement news today, Criterion has just revealed their January 2018 slate, which is set to include John Hughes’s The Breakfast Club (Cat #905 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 1/2, John Ford’s Young Mr. Lincoln (Cat #320 – from a new 4K restoration – Blu-ray and DVD) on 1/9, Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake (Cat #906 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 1/16, the Eclipse line title Claude Autant-Lara: Four Romantic Escapes from Occupied France (DVD only) on 1/23, and finally G. W. Pabst’s Westfront 1918 (Cat #907 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Kameradschaft (Cat #908 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 1/30. Twilight Time has also announced their January 2018 slate of limited edition Blu-ray titles, all due to ship on 1/23. It will include Husbands & Wives (1992), Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969), My Cousin Rachel (1952), and Dragonwyck (1946).

In other release news, we mentioned yesterday that the Studio Ghibli titles The Cat Returns and My Neighbors the Yamadas had been announced for release on Blu-ray by GKids and Shout! Factory on 1/16. Today, it appears that Whisper of the Heart will also arrive on Blu-ray that day.

Kino Lorber has just revealed that they’re working on a new Blu-ray and DVD release of Martin Scorsese’s Kundun (1997).

Shout! Factory has also set The Tiger Hunter for release on Blu-ray as part of its Shout Select line on 1/9.

Lionsgate has set Woodshock for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/28, followed by Blood Money on 12/19.

PBS Distribution is releasing Nova: Eclipse Over America on DVD on 11/14.

And Olive Films has announced its late October slate of Blu-ray and DVD releases, which is set to include the following (on both formats): Flipper: Season Three (1966-67), Rock-a-Doodle (1991), Stay Hungry (1976), The Miracle Worker (1962), The Madness of King George (1994), S.O.S. Tidal Wave (1939), The Vampire’s Ghost (1945), and Return of the Ape Man (1944).
