We’ve got a bunch of ground to cover here at The Bits, so we’re going to post a couple of news updates here today. For the first one this afternoon, we’re going to talk about a new Disney release that was announced on Sunday of all days (naturally, when I was too busy doing a bunch of work around the house to see the press release in time). So let’s get right into it...

Disney has officially revealed a new Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, featuring 100 animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Pixar Animation Studios, which is set to street on 11/14. The box set—which will retail for the whopping price of $1,500—is only going available from Walmart.com, with pre-orders expected to start on 9/18. What’s more, this is obviously an extremely limited release, very likely with just a few thousand copies produced. So if you want it, don’t wait. It will likely sell out very quickly.

The question that must be asked, of course, is: Should you want it? And to help you answer that, we’ve got some exclusive additional details for you...

As announced, the box set will include all 100 films on Blu-ray Disc (more on that in a minute), along with Digital codes for each title, plus “a copy of the original theatrical poster art, a collectible lithograph from Disney Animation’s new musical comedy Wish, and a collectible crystal Mickey ears hat with exclusive Disney 100 engraving.” [Read on here...]

Now... it’s important to note that those 100 films are included on 118 Blu-ray Discs. The difference is accounted for by the Pixar titles, 18 of which also include their existing special features discs.

What that means is, many of the other films already released on Blu-ray with special features discs will not include those previous special features. We’ve also learned that none of these films have been remastered, so for those previously released on Blu-ray, these new discs include the exact same transfers.

On the other hand, by our accounting there is one title that’s completely new to the Blu-ray format here: Pooh’s Heffalump Movie (2005). And there are several more that previously have only been available on Blu-ray from the Disney Movie Club, including: Saludos Amigos (1942), The Three Caballeros (1944), Make Mine Music (1946), Melody Time (1948), The Black Cauldron (1985), A Goofy Movie (1995), and Piglet’s Big Movie (2003).

Here’s a look at the opening packaging for this release...

As you might imagine, the audience for a box set like this is going to be extremely limited.

Ultimately—as expensive as this set is—it’s still a pretty decent value given the number of films included. It boils down to roughly $15 per title. On the other hand, again, they’re mostly without their previous special features. And because these are existing transfers only, if you already own most of these films on Blu-ray, you’re better off keeping those and just picking up the additional titles you want individually (including buying the Disney Movie Club-exclusive titles from DMC directly).

But tip of the hat to Disney for at least making a grand gesture on physical media to honor their 100 year legacy of animated films, I suppose.

Here’s the official trailer for this release...

Back with more later. Stay tuned...
