Meanwhile, Lionsgate is also going to be releasing the remastered Total Recall here in the US in a 4K Ultra HD Steelbook edition on 12/8 for just $22.99. Again, it will include Dolby Vision HDR, Dolby Atmos audio, and all the disc-based extras listed above. A couple more things before we go today...
First, in case you missed it when we posted the details yesterday, it appears that Shout! Factory has finally located the lost trimmed footage from Friday the 13th: Part II! And yes, it will be included in the box set. You can see our post from yesterday here, and here’s a link to the Facebook post that tells the story about how the producing team managed to find the footage—it’s a pretty good read. (And a big Bits shout-out to our old friend Peter Bracke for his role in that effort!)
Finally today, Paramount has announced that it’s going to be re-releasing Francis Ford Coppola’s oft-maligned The Godfather: Part III in a new Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone edition, featuring a new 4K restoration and edit of the film supervised by Coppola himself.
“Mario Puzo’s The Godfather: The Death of Michael Corleone is an acknowledgment of Mario’s and my preferred title and our original intentions for what became The Godfather: Part III,” Coppola said in a statement. “For this version of the finale, I created a new beginning and ending, and rearranged some scenes, shots, and music cues. With these changes and the restored footage and sound, to me, it is a more appropriate conclusion to The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II and I’m thankful to Jim Gianopulos and Paramount for allowing me to revisit it.”
The remastering effort included work to replace lower-resolution opticals in the original negative with better quality from original takes, along with dust clean-up, scratch repair, and adjustments made to the 5.1 sound mix. A limited theatrical release will happen in December (to mark the film’s 30th anniversary), with VOD and home entertainment releases to follow at a later date. Since they’re unlikely to release ONLY the third film, this would seem to indicate the potential for a long awaited 4K release of the trilogy.
