All right, no official update yet from Disney on the HDR on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 4K. There are reports that Dolby is claiming Dolby Vision will only be on the 4K streaming version, but we haven’t been able to confirm that yet. So stay tuned.

Disney has however, officially just announced (at D23) that they’re releasing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 10/3, with the Digital release due on 9/19. We know that it will have HDR (so HDR-10, no word specifically of Dolby Vision) and that it will include Dolby Atmos audio. “Bonus material includes a collection of behind-the-scenes, making-of stories, including a conversation with directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg; a sit-down with the two young newcomers who play Henry and Carina; the secrets behind the menacing new villain, Salazar, and his ferocious ghost sharks; an on-set visit with Jack’s first mate from all five films; a chat with Sir Paul McCartney who appears as Uncle Jack; and a discussion about the franchise’s legacy; along with hilarious bloopers, deleted scenes and memories from producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s photo diary.” No other details are yet available. You can see the cover art at left.

Meanwhile, we have two new Blu-ray reviews for you today: Tim has checked out Vinegar Syndrome’s Psycho Cop Returns and Psychic Killer, both worth your time if you’re a fan of the genre. Do check them out. [Read on here…]

Also, Indicator and Powerhouse Films in the UK are following up their Sinbad Trilogy Blu-ray set of Ray Harryhausen classic films with a new box: The Wonderful Worlds of Ray Harryhausen – Volume One: 1955-1960. This set will also be Region Free, it’s expected to street in October, and it will include HD restorations of It Came from Beneath the Sea and 20 Million Miles to Earth, as well as a 4K restoration of The 3 Worlds of Gulliver, plus many extras.

Arrow Video has announced the US and UK Blu-ray release of Blood Feast, J.D.’s Revenge, and George Romero: Between Night and Dawn (includes Crazies, Season of the Witch, and There’s Always Vanilla) for October. UK only titles coming from them in October include Miracle Mile and John Carpenter’s The Thing.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming is now available for pre-order on Amazon on Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD. [Update: Sony has just set Bram Stoker’s Dracula for 4K Ultra HD release on 10/3 as well.]

HBO has set The Wizard of Lies for Blu-ray and DVD release on 10/3.

Universal has just set E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for Blu-ray re-release on 9/12. We suspect that the 4K Ultra HD version will be released that day as well. [Update: E.T. is now official for 4K Ultra HD release from Universal on 9/12 – see this link.]

Universal has also set Lowriders for Blu-ray and DVD release on 9/5.

And Lionsgate has set Hero, starring Sam Elliott, for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 9/19.

Finally, this is pretty awesome: Samsung has made a 10-meter (34-foot) Cinema LED Screen for movie theaters. It’s full 4K, 10x brighter than a traditional projection system, features HDR, and was certified by Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) so it meets industry color standards. This is no doubt just the first step toward even larger such systems for theaters. Fascinating. More here at Engadget.

Now then... as anticipated, I’ll be at the D23 convention tomorrow in Anaheim, so anything interesting I learn there (about anything) I’ll post on my Twitter and Facebook. In the meantime, have a great weekend!

Stay tuned…
