All right, we’re working on a bunch things here at the website today, including more reviews, follow-up on upcoming titles from our industry sources, and a big My Two Cents editorial/commentary piece on the current state of the home video industry that I’ll be posting here after the July 4th holiday.

In the meantime though, we do have a few more new disc reviews for you today, including...

Dennis’ thoughts on Harvey Hart’s Bus Riley’s Back in Town (1965) on Blu-ray from Imprint Films and Via Vision.

Stuart’s take on Don Siegel’s Steve McQueen/WWII drama Hell Is for Heroes (1962) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And Stephen’s look at Steve Jodrell’s Shame (1988) on Blu-ray from Umbrella Entertainment via Vinegar Syndrome. [Read on here...]

In release news this afternoon, we’ve learned from retail sources that Universal appears to have settled on a 9/30 street date for its Fast X and Fast & Furious 10-Movie Collection on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD... that is, if Amazon is to be believed. But that’s a Wednesday, so 9/29 is more likely. Retail sources had previously suggested a street date of 8/8, so we’ll have to wait and see. Hopefully, this isn’t a situation like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, where the street date wasn’t made official until many stores had already received their initial stock of discs and put them up for sale.

Also, Universal will be bringing Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth (1998) to 4K Ultra HD on 8/22. The film stars Cate Blanchette and Geoffrey Rush.

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment and Adult Swim will release a Rick and Morty: The Complete Seasons 1-6 set on DVD (and possibly Blu-ray) on 9/12.

Plainon Pictures in Germany is releasing Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale (2022) on 4K Ultra HD on 7/25. (Here’s the Amazon.de pre-order link.)

Also, Paramount is apparently releasing a Beverly Hills Cop Trilogy 4K Ultra HD box set in France on 10/4, which suggests that Beverly Hills Cop III is coming to 4K Ultra HD here in the States around the same time. (Here’s the Amazon.fr pre-order link.)

For you anime fans, Sentai Filmworks is releasing a 15-disc Gatchaman: The Complete Collection Blu-ray box set on 9/26. You can see the temp cover art below.

On a related note, Mill Creek Entertainment will be holding its Ultraman Day on 7/10. From 7/1 to 7/10, all of the company’s Ultraman Blu-ray and DVD titles will be on sale for 50% off at Deep Discount—movies, complete series sets, Steelbooks, the whole smash. So be sure to take advantage if you’re a fan.

And Kino Lorber Studio Classics has set James Neilson’s The First Time (1969) and David Beaird’s It Takes Two (1988) for Blu-ray release on 9/5.

In other news today, if you’re unfamiliar with the history of the infamous “Wilhelm scream” sound effect, this CBS Morning piece is worth a few minutes of your time. It seems that the original recordings of the scream have just been unearthed in the UCLA Film School archives. My favorite part of this is that there are apparently alternate takes of the scream, so I’m hoping that some of those will start being used in films in the future (so as to be a little less jarring). Anyway, love the sound effect or hate it, it’s a good story. Enjoy!

Finally today, we’ve just posted a major update of our Release Dates & Cover Art section here at The Bits (see the Cover Art link at the top of this page), featuring all the latest Blu-ray, DVD & 4K Ultra HD cover artwork and Amazon pre-order links. Lots of new and recently-announced titles have been added. And every time you order literally anything from Amazon after clicking to them through one of our links (including movie discs, books, computer drives, auto parts, pajamas, board games, hell... even cans of soup), you’re helping to support our work here at The Digital Bits and we really appreciate it! It really does make a big difference in our ability to keep going in support of A/V enthusiasts, cinephiles, and the home video community. (Thanks to our own Russell Hammond for all his hard work on the section!)
