Now then, we’ve also got a new Blu-ray review from Dennis today, who checks in with his thoughts on Irvin Pitchel’s They Won’t Believe Me (1947) from the Warner Archive Collection.
And Stephen has chimed in as well with his take on Phillipe de Broca’s Le Magnifique (1973), as newly released on Blu-ray by Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
In announcement news today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially set Labyrinth for re-release on 4K Ultra HD on 8/17 as a new 35th Anniversary Edition, featuring Dolby Vision HDR this time (the previous 4K release was HDR10 only) and with new extras including a Deleted & Alternate Scene Oubliette (featuring over 25 minutes of never-before-seen lost and alternate scenes with commentary by Brian Henson) and Sarah’s Screen Tests (a collection of rare, original screen tests for the role of Sarah featuring Molly Ringwald, Trini Alvarado, Tracey Gold, Claudia Wells, Jill Schoelen, Maddie Corman, and Danielle von Zerneck). Plus all the previous extras will be included, and everything will come packaged in a new 28-page Digibook with rare photos and liner notes. You see the cover artwork below...
In other release news today, Lionsgate and Starz have set American Gods: Season Three for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 7/27.
Lionsgate will also release Every Breath You Take on Blu-ray and DVD on 7/27. The film stars Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan.
AMC, Sundance, and Shudder will release A Discovery of Witches: Season 2 on Blu-ray and DVD on 8/17.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC will release Pennyworth: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray and DVD on 7/13.
The Film Detective is releasing Lesley Selander’s Flight to Mars (1951) on Blu-ray and DVD on 7/20. Not lost on us is the fact that 7/20 is the anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Produced by Walter Mirisch, the film has been remastered in 4K from the original 35 mm Cinecolor separation negatives by the excellent Paramount Pictures Archives team. The disc will include a pair of new documentary shorts from Ballyhoo Motion Pictures (Mirisch: From Bomba to Body Snatchers and Interstellar Travelogues: Cinema’s First Space Race) and more.
It hasn’t been officially announced yet, but Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is getting ready to reveal the 4K Ultra HD release of Rian Johnson’s Looper on 7/13. All of the bonus features will reportedly be in full 4K. Extras will include audio commentary with Rian Johnson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt, 5 featurettes (Looper: From the Beginning, Scoring Looper, The Science of Time Travel, The Two Joes, and New Future, Old School), 21 Deleted Scenes with commentary by Rian Johnson and Noah Segan, and the Looper Animated Trailer. We’ll post the Amazon link and cover artwork as soon as it’s official.
And don’t forget that Sony’s single-film SKU of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove in 4K Ultra HD will street on 7/6.
All right, one last item today... I trust that you all saw our updated news post on Wednesday concerning Paramount’s official comment about those Star Trek I-IV 4K release rumors that broke early that morning. Their official statement was essentially that the Amazon France listing had been taken down and they have “no news to announce at this time.” Now, two and a half decades of experience in this industry tells me that if this 4K release was completely bogus, the studio would have quickly denied it. So my gut... as well as information from additional sources... tells me that this release is real, but the studio is just not ready to officially announce it yet. Keep in mind that the reported 9/8 street date is no accident—that’s the anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series’ original broadcast debut. My guess is that the studio will likely announce this release sometime before Creation’s official 55th anniversary Star Trek convention in Las Vegas (8/11-15), so they can actually talk about it at the event. Until then... my advice is for all of you to remain calm, and stay tuned for additional news on this in the coming weeks and months.
