All right… before we get started today, we’ve posted a whole bunch of new disc reviews in the last two days, including my own takes on Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan and The Post, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, and Randal Kleiser’s Grease: 40th Anniversary Edition all in 4K Ultra HD from Paramount and/or 20th Century Fox. All are worth your time, but let me tell you… Saving Private Ryan is a revelation, an absolutely reference-quality A/V experience on this format. It’s really something. All of these titles are currently available except for Ryan, which streets on 5/8.

Meanwhile, Tim has checked in with reviews of Shout! Factory’s Doctor Detroit, Scream Factory’s Prince of Darkness: Collector’s Edition (both regular and the new Steelbook edition), Epic/Dread Central’s Terrifier, Fox’s Legion: The Complete First Season, and Arrow’s Killer Klowns from Outer Space, all of them on Blu-ray Disc. Do give them a look! [Read on here...]

Now then… 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has finally officially announced the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release of John McTiernan’s Die Hard: 30th Anniversary Edition on 5/15. Extras will include the following previously-released extras: Audio commentary by director John McTiernan and production designer Jackson DeGovia, scene-specific commentary by special effects supervisor Richard Edlund, text commentary by members of the cast and crew, The News Casts featurette, an interactive Style Gallery, interactive Cinefex and American Cinematographer articles, the full screenplay, trailers, and TV spots. The Ultra HD will include a native 4K film scan and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Also today, we have word from retail sources that Paramount is working on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for release on 4K Ultra HD in July or August (street date TBA). It also appears that their forthcoming 4K releases of the Tom Clancy films, The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears, and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit are coming in August or September (the new Jack Ryan TV series debuts on Amazon on 8/31). Speaking of Paramount, Amazon had listed the Mission: Impossible films for release on 4K on 6/12 (including Mission: Impossible, Mission: Impossible 2, Mission: Impossible III, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), but those listings have now disappeared. Keep in mind, the titles haven’t been officially announced yet, but Best Buy now has them up for pre-order with a street date of 6/26. So we would expect an official announcement soon. And we also have word that Fox’s Death Wish (2018) is due on Blu-ray and 4K on 6/5.

We’ve updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits with all of the above information accordingly.

By the way, back to the subject of reviews… over the next two or three weeks, we may have a few less daily news updates here at The Bits than usual, and the reason for that is that we expect a flood of major 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases to come in for review. And like Saving Private Ryan, which we posted last night, I’m going to try and get them up ASAP for you guys as soon as they come in. I know that a TON of you have interest in them.
So please bear with us… and stay tuned!
