Criterion’s June slate includes Shaft in 4K Ultra HD, plus 20th Century Studios announces Death on the Nile & more

All right, this is going to be the first of two news updates here at The Bits today, as we have multiple 4K and Blu-ray related developments that deserve their due attention. But first, more new disc reviews...

Tim has checked in with a look at Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, as recently released on Blu-ray by Umbrella Entertainment.

Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci and Douglas Sirk’s Written on the Wind on Blu-ray, from Universal and Criterion respectively.

And Stephen has offered his take on Simon Kinberg’s The 355, David Hamilton’s Bilitis, Fred Schepisi’s The Devil’s Playground, and Mik Cribben’s Beware: Children at Play on Blu-ray, from Universal, Fun City Editions, Umbrella Entertainment, and Vinegar Syndrome.

Now then, the big announcement news today is that our friends at The Criterion Collection have officially revealed their June release slate, which will include an updated version of Michael Powell and Emeric Presburger’s The Tales of Hoffmann (Spine #317 – Blu-ray) on 6/7, Ekwa Msangi’s Farewell Amor (Spine #1128 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 6/14, Stanley Kwan’s Rouge (Spine #1129 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Gordon Parks’ Shaft (Spine #1130 – 4K/Blu-ray and Blu-ray) on 6/21, and Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World (Spine #1132 – Blu-ray and DVD) and John Waters’ Pink Flamingos (Spine Z#1131 – Blu-ray) on 6/28. Note that Shaft is a new 4K digital restoration and will include Dolby Vision HDR. You’ll find the cover artwork for all of these titles below, and you can read more details about each release here on the Criterion website.

In other announcement news, 20th Century Studios has just made Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile official for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 4/5, with the Digital release expected on 3/29. Audio on the 4K will be English Dolby Atmos, with HDR10 high dynamic range. Extras on both the Blu-ray and 4K SKUs will include 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Death on the Nile: Novel to Film, Agatha Christie: Travel Can Be Murder, Design on the Nile, and Branagh/Poirot) along with 8 deleted scenes. You can see the cover artwork below.

Also, while it’s not yet officially announced, Lionsgate has revealed the final cover artwork for Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall, which arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K on 4/26. You’ll find that below as well.

Lionsgate has also set WarHunt for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital on 4/12.

One more to go: Kino Lorber Studio Classics has set Ferdinando Baldi’s Treasure of the Four Crowns (1983) for release on Blu-ray on 5/10, including both polarized and anaglyphic 3-D versions on Blu-ray 3D thanks to a new restoration by the 3-D Film Archive. The company has also announced that Sergio Sollima’s Violent City (1970) is coming to Blu-ray on 5/17.
