And... it’s official! 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release Ridley Scott’s original Alien on 4K Ultra HD on 4/23 in honor of the film’s 40th anniversary. A Steelbook version will also be available exclusively at Best Buy (pictured below).

Per the press release: “The film was restored in 4K in 2018 by 20th Century Fox at Company 3/Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, supervised by Ridley Scott and Pam Dery, with the 4K scans were done at EFilm.”

The release will include the 1979 Theatrical Version (with the 1999 audio commentary by Ridley Scott) and the 2003 Director’s Cut (with the 2003 commentary by Scott and members of the cast and crew), both the composer’s original isolated score and the final theatrical isolated score in Dolby Digital 4.1, and deleted scenes. (And we believe that all of that will be on the actual 4K disc, but we’re checking to confirm.) [Read on here...]

The 4K release will include HDR10 high dynamic range and will retain the previous DTS-HD Master Audio mix in 5.1 on the Director’s Cut and 4.1 on the Theatrical Version. The 4K will also include English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, and French DTS 5.1.

FYI, we’ve asked Fox whether the Blu-ray content mirrors the 4K disc and if there’s any other extras included, perhaps on a Blu-ray bonus disc. When we hear back we’ll post an update here.

Also today, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 4/16, with the Digital release set for 4/2. The 4K will include HDR10 with English Dolby Atmos audio.

Extras on both the Blu-ray and 4K versions will include an alternate opening (with introduction by Shyamalan), 12 deleted scenes (also with introduction by Shyamalan – including David Alone at Bar, Patricia Talks to Cheerleaders, David Encounters Pierce, Casey in Art Class, Dr. Staple Explains Machine, Mrs. Price in Waiting Room, Mrs. Price Talks to Elijah, Dr. Staple Drinks Tea, Pierce Checks Elijah’s Room, Mrs. Price Tells Elijah About Surgery, David Submits to Dr. Staple, and Patients Worship The Beast), 4 The Collection of Main Characters featurettes (including David Dunn, Elijah Price, Kevin Wendell Crumb, and The Rest of the Family), and 10 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including Bringing the Team Back Together, David Dunn vs. The Beast, Glass Decoded, Breaking Glass: The Stunts, Connecting the Glass Universe, M. Night Shyamalan: Behind the Lens, The Sound of Glass, Enhancing the Spectacle, Raven Hill Memorial, and Night Vision), and video of A Conversation with James McAvoy and M. Night Shyamalan.

Sadly, there is no sign of Unbreakable being released on 4K Ultra HD from Disney, but one can hope. We’ve updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits with the these new announcements regardless.

Also here at The Bits today, we’ve posted the weekly update of our Release Dates & Artwork section with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, whenever you order literally anything from Amazon after clicking through one of our links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we really appreciate it.

We’ve also posted two new Blu-ray reviews for you to check out, including Tim’s look at Disney’s new The Little Mermaid: Anniversary Edition and also Dennis’ take on Higher Learning from Sony.

And for those of you wondering, yes... we will be reviewing The Little Mermaid in 4K as well. Unfortunately, our Oppo 4K UHD player was bricked by a bad firmware update a few weeks ago, so we had to send it out for repair. But it comes back any day and so we’ll get back to 4K UHD reviews later this week. Thanks for your patience.

You can see the final cover artwork for Alien above and below (the Best Buy Steelbook packaging is also below), though you’ve probably seen it already as it leaked from international retail sources about a month ago. Glass is down below too and we’ve added Amazon.com pre-order links if they’re available...

Alien: 40th Anniversary (4K Ultra HD) Glass (4K Ultra HD) Glass (Blu-ray Disc)

Alien: 40th Anniversary (Best Buy 4K Ultra HD Steelbook)

That’s all for now. Stay tuned...
