Meanwhile, Crunchyroll has just revealed that they’re going to be releasing Taichi Ishidate’s anime Violet Evergarden: The Movie (2020) on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 5/30. This is based on the 2015-16 Japanese “light” novel series by writer Kana Akatsuki, and is the sequel to Violet Evergarden (2018).
Kino Lorber Studio Classics has revealed that they’re working on a 4K Ultra HD edition of Abel Ferrara’s Bad Lieutenant (1992) for release sometime later this year. Like most of their UHDs, it’ll be mastered from a new 4K scan with Dolby Vision HDR.
StudioCanal is releasing Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro’s The City of Lost Children (1995) on 4K Ultra HD in the UK in the coming months as well. There isn’t an official street date yet, but the title is already listed for pre-order on Amazon UK. You can see the cover artwork below.
Speaking of UK releases, Second Sight’s 4K UHD of Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) is also now available for pre-order on Amazon UK. Street date for that is 5/1 and again, the cover artwork is below.
And while we’re on a run, you remember how we mentioned (last week) that Warner’s Superman: 5-Film Collection was going to be released in Steelbook packaging in the UK, and Zavvi had leaked the cover artwork? Well, not only is the Steelbook Collection now available for pre-order on Amazon UK, 4K Ultra HD singles of all of the individual films except Superman: The Movie are now up for pre-order on Amazon UK as well. Here’s what they look like (and you can click on the links to visit the Amazon UK pre-order pages—note that these should be all region)...
We suspect Warner’s official announcement is going to drop at any time, possibly as soon as tomorrow. We don’t know if there will be 4K singles here in the States, or if there will be a Steelbook version of the Collection here or not. It’s possible that some combination of those will be retail exclusives here in the US. But the Superman: 5-Film Collection 4K box set will certainly be a wide release here. We’ll post the US artwork, pre-order links, and details as soon as we have them from Warner Bros.
In other news today, the 76th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) winners were announced last night, with Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) taking the prize for Best Film. You can see the full list of winners here.
Also here in the States, the 75th Directors Guild of America Awards winners were also announced this weekend, with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) taking the honors for Best Theatrical Film. You can read more here.
And sadly, we need to take a moment today to acknowledge the passing of Matsumoto Leiji (85), the legendary manga artist and creator of the Japanese Space Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and Space Battleship Yamato anime films, as well as longtime actor and comedian Richard Belzer (78), of Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: SUV fame. Also recently departed are the great composer of music for Roots, Star Trek, and other TV series Gerald Fried (95), and also actress Stella Stevens (84), of The Poseidon, The Nutty Professor, and many other classic films and TV series. You can click on the preceding name links to read more about each of them at Variety.
We’ll leave you today with a look at the cover art for a couple more of the UK titles mentioned above (plus Cinderella), with Amazon UK pre-order links if available....
Back tomorrow with more. Stay tuned...
