More 4K/HDR news from CES 2018, plus Mr. Robot: Season 3, Vice Principals, MST3K: Season 11 & more

First off, before we begin today, a number of you have asked about Lionsgate’s delayed Terminator 2: Judgment Day 4K Ultra HD EndoArm edition. We’ve contacted the studio for an update and we’ll keep you informed when they respond.

Now then, in news from CES 2018, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) says that there’s been an eightfold increase in Ultra HD disc sales in 2017 from the previous year. 4K Ultra HD player sales are also up 133% in 2017 over 2016. FutureSource data suggests that more than a third of households globally anticipate purchasing a 4K TV by 2021, while fully half of the households in Western Europe and the US expect to do so by then. The BDA has also officially added HDR10+, SL-HDR2 (for Philips and Technicolor), and Dolby Vision to the Ultra HD spec, in addition to regular HDR10. In more CES news, Panasonic has announced four new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players that support Dolby Vision and/or HDR10+, including the DP-UB320, DP-UB330, DP-UB420, and DP-UB820. All are Ultra HD Premium certified. The UB420 and UB820 will both support HDR10+ right out of the box. They’re expected to be released in Q2. The price on each is still TBA.

In title announcement news today, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has set Mr. Robot: Season_3.0 for release on Blu-ray on 3/27 (SRP $44.98). Extras on the 3-disc set will include deleted scenes, a gag reel, and a trio of featurettes.

Universal will also release The Man Who Invented Christmas, starring Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, and Jonathan Pryce, and Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel, starring Jim Belushi, Juno Temple, Justin Timberlake, and Kate Winslet, on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/6.

HBO Home Entertainment has set Vice Principals: The Complete Series for DVD only release on 4/10. They also have Ballers: The Complete Third Season coming on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/18.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release Novitiate on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/6.

By the way, Sony’s Zero Dark Thirty 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (see our review here on The Bits), which has been exclusive to Best Buy, is now available on Amazon and in wide release.

Shout! Factory has set their Netflix original series Mystery Science Theater 3000: Season 11 for release on Blu-ray on 4/17 (SRP $99.99). The 8-disc set will include the We Brought Back MST3K documentary.

Shout! has also set the submarine rescue thriller Gray Lady Down for release on Blu-ray on 4/24, with The Tribes of Palos Verdes, starring Maika Monroe and Jennifer Garner, coming on Blu-ray on 4/10.

And finally, Time Life is releasing The Jackie Gleason Show in Color on DVD on 2/6, featuring four remastered episodes of the classic variety TV series, including three unreleased Honeymooners sketches, unseen for more than 50 years. SRP is $9.95.
