Also today, I’ve finally posted my thoughts on George Miller’s Mad Max (1979), as newly-remastered in 4K by the good folks over at Kino Lorber Studio Classics. I’ve also updated my recent review of the Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ Blu-ray release of the film, based on new information I’ve uncovered in the process of comparing the Kino 4K and Blu-ray discs to the 2015 Scream Factory Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, and also MGM’s original 2010 Blu-ray Disc.
The upshot of all this is that Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ new Ultra HD release is definitely mastered from a new (or at least recent) 4K scan of the original camera negative and they appear to have put some real effort into the color grading and digital clean-up. But Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ recent Blu-ray Disc looks to be mastered from exactly the same film scan used by Scream for their 2015 Blu-ray, simply with different color grading. And Kino has done virtually no digital clean-up on it. So the new Kino Blu-ray is definitely not mastered from the new 4K scan. Also, both the Kino and Scream BDs show marked improvement over the original MGM disc, so I believe we’re looking at three different film scans across all four discs. Anyway, you’ll find all the details in the two new reviews.
More disc reviews are on the way over the coming days, so be sure to watch for them.
That’s all for now. Stay tuned!
