When it comes to the depths of obscurity, few companies manage to put out consistently under the radar material like Severin Films.

Digging up everything from cult horror oddities to lost exploitation classics, it’s clear that little known and underappreciated cinema is their bread and butter.

Some of the company’s most notable releases include Bloody Moon, Hardware, BMX Bandits, Santa Sangre, The Other Hell, Cathy’s Curse, and The Devil’s Honey.

I’ve given Warner’s Blade Runner 2049 an in-depth look on Blu-ray 3D, a solid disc that’s Best Buy-exclusive but that’s also rather hard to find at the moment. It seems to be shipping in low quantities, as many of the retailer’s stores don’t have the disc in stock and you can’t currently find it for sale on their website either. In any case, you can read my thoughts here.

In announcement news today, Kino has set a pair of classic Gloria Swanson silent comedies, both directed by Allan Dwan, for release on Blu-ray on 4/10 as part of their Studio Classics line-up. They include Manhandled (1924) and Stage Struck (1925). Each is mastered from recent 2K scans, and will include audio commentaries, booklet essays, and accompanying piano scores. [Read on here…]

While the former deals primarily in everything from cult horror oddities to lost exploitation classics, the latter tackles many shot-on-video features from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although both companies also occasionally do contemporary titles, little known and underappreciated cinema is their bread and butter. Some of each company’s most notable releases include Bloody Moon, Hardware, BMX Bandits, Santa Sangre, The Other Hell, Cathy’s Curse, Things, Murderlust, Phobe, and Sledgehammer, just to name a few.

First up today, Tim’s given Art Linson’s Where the Buffalo Roam a fresh look on Blu-ray via the new Shout Select Collector’s Edition release. The film stars Bill Murray and Peter Boyle and is worth a look.

You’ll get all 24 episodes along with 5 featurettes (#Just Ask BBT 2.0, The Ever-Expanding Universe of The Big Bang Theory, Mad Props, Who’s the Baby Now, and 2016 Comic Con Panel), plus a gag reel. Afternoon, folks. We’re starting off the new week with a pair of new Blu-ray reviews for you to enjoy. Tim Salmons has turned in his look at Scream Factory’s The Legend of Hell House and longtime Bits veteran Todd Doogan has returned with a look at Kino Lorber’s terrific new One Million Years B.C. Blu-ray. Both are well worth your time, so be sure to check them out.

In release news today, first up a biggie: 20th Century Fox’s Logan is now available for Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD pre-order on Amazon (via the links in this sentence and also the temp cover artwork below). We’ve got some more Blu-ray release news for you this afternoon…

Here’s something for you catalog fans: The official Disney Movie Club has revealed that they’re going to be releasing the live action classics Swiss Family Robinson (1960) and Return to Oz (1985) on Blu-ray on 4/14, though only to club members. Other classic live-action titles are already available on Blu-ray to club members, including The Apple Dumpling Gang (1975), The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), Polyanna (1960), Old Yeller (1957), The Love Bug (1968), and Herbie Rides Again (1974). I haven’t seen any of these personally, but readers tell me they’re pretty good on the whole. There are currently no signs that these BDs will be made available widely, although that’s always a possibility down the line. The regular club price is $29.95 for Blu-ray, but when you first join you get some good discounts. Our friends at the Warner Archive will release 42nd Street (1933) on Blu-ray on 4/21. The Blu-ray is mastered from the new 2015 restoration, with DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono audio. Extras will include the From Book to Screen to Stage 2006 retrospective documentary, 3 vintage WB short subjects (Hollywood Newsreel, A Trip Thru a Hollywood Studio, and Harry Warren: America’s Foremost Composer), the vintage promotional newsreel The 42nd Street Special, 2 vintage 1933 WB cartoons (Young and Healthy and Shuffle Off to Buffalo), and the original theatrical trailer.  [Read on here…]
