Afternoon folks! Hope you’re all doing well and Happy Rosh Hashanah to those of you who celebrate it.
We’ve got a couple things for you today... first a new Blu-ray review: Our own Tim Salmons has just checked in with his Pick-Ups thoughts on Shout! Factory’s new Shout Select title, Bill & Ted’s Most Excellent Collection, which arrived on disc last Tuesday. Tim would like you to know that the set is most definitely non, non, non, non, non-heinous. Do check out his review here.
Tim has also updated his recent review of Scream Factory’s The Thing: Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray to reflect the updated audio track found on all final product copies now in stores. The track is fixed and sounds great. [Read on here…]

Warner’s Bat v Supe: UCE big box, plus new Kino, McQuarrie/Star Wars book deal & animated Indy!
Well... based on an overwhelmingly positive reaction to my look at art books on 2001: A Space Odyssey last night, it seems like you guys enjoy it when we roam a bit off in the wilderness here at The Bits, thematically speaking. So I think we’ll try and do it a little more often in the weeks and months ahead. It’s certainly fun and it definitely keeps things interesting. Thanks for all the kind words, and I’ve very glad you liked the article. [Read on here…]

Savoring Great Film Scores, Catching Up on Classic Blu-rays & George Hamilton
I think it’s time we caught up. Walking outside during this Oklahoma summer is like tasting something after it’s been in the microwave about eight minutes. The heat and stupidity started even before Memorial Day and has not abated. It’s like we’re living on Mars – I’ve been pricing those spacesuits which protected Matt Damon.
But thank goodness for the movies. Especially the kind one watches in the comfort of one’s own home. Let’s discuss.
Here’s a serious complaint – as I learned over the years, watching a great film is a multi-sensory experience – you see, you listen, you emote. And for me, always a major component of that experience is the music score. For those who pay attention, music is usually the heart of the movie – name a classic up through about 1990 or so for which you can’t hum a main theme. Or name a dud or two with a score that is better than the picture. [Read on here...]

Happy Tuesday, everyone. Hope you all had a great Fourth of July holiday. A special tip of the hat to the folks at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for successfully entering the orbit of Jupiter with their Juno mission! There should be some pretty cool science to come out of that over the coming months.
Today’s post is a quick one, but we do have a couple interesting items for you today...
First up, our own Tim Salmons has just turned in his latest Pick-Ups column review, this time featuring a look at Scream Factory’s new The Return of the Living Dead: Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray! The disc streets on 7/19, and it looks like it’s really been worth the wait. Don’t miss it! [Read on here…]
Pick-Ups for the Week of June 21, 2016
Welcome to a new edition of Pick-Ups!
Thank you for tuning in. I’m back from a break with some new reviews for you. By the way, did you folks go out and see The Conjuring 2? If you haven’t yet, you’re in for a treat. It’s easily one of the best horror films of the year. And if you’re seeing it at the Alamo Drafthouse, like I did, you’re in for a selection of some nice horror shorts. Definitely go out and see it if you can. [Read on here...]

Afternoon, folks! We hope you all had a fine long holiday weekend. We’d like to send a special shout-out today to all those of you serving in the armed forces around the world, and to the families and friends of the same who have been wounded or made the ultimate sacrifice. Our hats off to you.
Now then, we’re kicking off the shortened week here at The Bits with a couple new Blu-ray reviews...
First up, our own Tim Salmons has checked in with a new weekly Pick-Ups review column, which begins with an in-depth look at a fascinating 1960s horror title that’s gone through its share of revisions and re-issues: Blood Bath, which is now available in a very nice new Blu-ray edition from Arrow Video. Do give it a look.
Also today, Jim Hemphill has offered his thoughts on Henry Hathaway’s 1954 Cinemascope western Garden of Evil, which stars Gary Cooper, Susan Hayward, Richard Widmark, and Cameron Mitchell. It’s now available on Blu-ray from our friends at Twilight Time. It too is worth a look on disc, so enjoy the review. [Read on here…]
