While I’m gathering my final thoughts on my experience of Ultra HD Blu-ray at CES 2016 last week (to wrap up our coverage of the convention), I wanted to jump in quickly today to take care of a couple important pieces of business here at The Bits.
First, our own Tim Salmons has turned in his thoughts on Arrow Video’s new Blood Rage: Special Edition Blu-ray.
I’ve also just posted my in-depth review of Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which streets tomorrow on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, and DVD. The film just took home the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical Film of all things. Don’t miss it. [Read on here…]

Okay, there will be at least a couple updates today as I work to wrap up our coverage of CES 2016. The first is a quick one because of a bit of breaking news: Philips has just announced their own entry into the UHD Blu-ray player market, the BDP7501. It has a smaller form factor that is typical of most BD players, features HDMI 2.0a, 4K upscaling, built-in WiFi, and 4K streaming via Netflix and other digital providers. There’s no price and street date announced yet beyond sub $400 (which probably means $399, making it one of the cheaper offerings) and Spring 2016. Here’s what it looks like... [Read on here…]

All right, I’m finally back from CES 2016, after three long and exhausting days of running around the show and a harrowing late-night drive back to Southern California amid rain and snow. And I’ve gotten a good long rest to recover from all of the above.
So let’s talk about what I saw related to UHD BD on the show floor Wednesday... [Read on here…]

The UHD Alliance held their official press event at CES 2016 last evening to begin the official unveiling of “full-featured” Ultra High Definition as an in-home consumer experience here at the convention. The Alliance was formed in part to simplify the UHD experience for consumers by unifying the consumer electronics industry and content creators behind a single standard, thus avoiding the pain of another costly format war. Our own Michael Coate has just posted a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column here on The Bits, featuring a great look back at the Bond classic Thunderball on the film’s 50th anniversary! Thunderball is certainly one of our favorite films of the series around here, and to celebrate the occasion Michael has moderated a great roundtable discussion of film historians, including Jon Burlingame, Robert A. Caplen, James Chapman, John Cork, Lee Pfeiffer, Steven Jay Rubin, Graham Rye, and Bruce Scivally. It’s a fine piece, as always, so be sure to give it a look this afternoon. [Read on here…]
