All right, we’ve got a bunch of interesting studio and indie release announcements today, including some new titles, catalog titles, TV stuff and more.

First though, our own Dr. Adam Jahnke has turned in a new Jahnke’s Electric Theatre column today, featuring the latest installment of An Honor to Be Nominated. This time, Adam looks back at Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, Part III. Enjoy!

Now then... announcement news... 20th Century Fox is releasing the indie music hit Once on Blu-ray on 4/1 (SRP $19.99) but only as an Amazon.com exclusive. Following on BD on 4/29, also as an Amazon exclusive, is Notes on a Scandal (SRP $19.99), which stars Cate Blanchette, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy. You can see the cover artwork for both titles below. All right, I apologize in advance for the fact that today’s post is so short, but I’m suffering through a bout of vertigo caused by having slept in a lousy position for too many hours last night and thereby strained my neck. Ugh. Seriously, right? Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Anyway, our very own Dr. Adam Jahnke has turned in a new installment of his Electric Theater column today featuring his weekly An Honor to Be Nominated look back at deserving films that were Oscar-nominated but didn’t win. Today’s subject: Herbert Ross’ The Turning Point (1977). Enjoy! [Read on here…]

An Honor To Be Nominated: The Turning Point

If it can be difficult to remember who won the Academy Award for Best Picture, it’s downright mindbending trying to remember everything else it was up against. In An Honor To Be Nominated, I’ll be taking a look back at some of the movies the Oscar didn’t go to and trying to determine if they were robbed, if the Academy got it right, or if they should ever have been nominated in the first place.  [Read on here…]

The Boys of Company Bits have stepped up today with some good stuff for you...

First up, Doogan has turned in his weekly Doogan’s Queue installment of his Gripe Soda column, running down all the great Blu-ray and DVD titles that street tomorrow.

To go along with that, Russell Hammond has updated the Release Dates & Artwork section with all the latest Blu-ray and DVD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, a portion of anything you order from Amazon after you click through to them from our links goes to help support our work here at The Bits and we really appreciate it. [Read on here…]

More good stuff for you today…

First, Dr. Jahnke has posted a BD review of Sony’s The Big Gundown, a great spaghetti western from 1966 directed by Sergio Sollima. Sounds like the disc and its extras are pretty swell too. Don’t miss it.

Also today, our own Michael Coate has posted an update of his History, Legacy & Showmanship column from back on November – It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Retrospective – with a great roundtable interview from some of the folks involved in the film’s restoration and Criterion’s fine new Blu-ray release, including Karen Stetler, the Criterion Blu-ray Disc producer; Robert A. Harris, the restoration/reconstruction producer; Karen Sharpe-Kramer, the widow of producer-director Stanley Kramer; and the team that recorded the audio commentary track: Mark Evanier, Michael Schlesinger, and Paul Scrabo. It’s a great read, so I highly recommend that you give it a look. [Read on here…]

An Honor To Be Nominated: The Color Purple

Back in 2011, I started a gig as DVD columnist for a website called The Morton Report. It was (and is) a fine site but after awhile, the challenge of writing about the same subject for two different outlets began to take its toll. I left the site and devoted my DVD-related ramblings back to The Bits.

While I was there, I created a column called An Honor To Be Nominated. The mission statement for the column was fairly simple:  [Read on here...]

Our very own Dr. Adam Jahnke has posted a new review of Ziad Doueiri’s The Attack on Blu-ray Disc. The title is now available from Cohen Media Group. Sounds like an interesting film, so do check it out.

In announcement news today, Universal has set Continuum: Season Two for BD and DVD release on 3/25. Extras will include commentary with the cast and crew on most episodes and the Continuum: Behind the Scenes featurette. They also have Psych: The Complete Eighth Season coming on DVD only on 4/1, with podcasts, extended scenes and more.   [Read on here…]
