All right, first up today we have two more Blu-ray reviews from Tim for you, including his thoughts on Warner Archive’s Doc Hollywood and also Dragonwyck from Twilight Time. Both are worth a look. And a little later today I’ll be back with my review of Sony’s The Dark Crystal on 4K Ultra HD (I’ll add the link here when it’s up).

Now then, the BIG news this afternoon (weren’t we just talking about this yesterday?) is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has now officially announced the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the Wachowskis’ 1999 sci-fi/cyberpunk classic The Matrix on 5/22 (SRP $41.99). The 4K release has been produced from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative, a remaster supervised by the film’s director of photography, Bill Pope. The resulting image has been given HDR color grades in both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, both of which will be featured on this 4K UHD release. Furthermore, the 4K release will feature Dolby Atmos object-based audio. The actual 4K disc will also include a written introduction by the Wachowskis, along with all four previously-available audio commentaries (including the Philosopher, Critics, Cast & Crew, and Composer tracks). We’ve got a pair of new Blu-ray reviews for you to start the new week off today…

Our own Tim Salmons has checked in with his thoughts on Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell, now available as a new Collector’s Edition from our friends at Scream Factory. Tim has also checked out Lionsgate’s new Vestron Video Collector’s Series release of Mark Lester’s Class of 1999. Do give them a look.

Meanwhile, Michael Coate has just posted a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column, featuring an interview with filmmaker Vincent Pereira on the subject of Dario Argento’s classic giallo film Suspiria, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year.

The film was recently restored in 4K by Synapse Films and released in terrific new Blu-ray editions (one of which is reviewed here). It’s a great interview, so be sure to check that out as well. [Read on here…]

Tim Salmons has checked out Cannonball Run from Warner Bros, Cannonball Run II from Umbrella Entertainment (a Region Free disc), and also Lionsgate’s new Vestron Video Collector’s Series release of Gothic. All are work a look, so do check them out.

In announcement news today, Paramount has just officially set Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life for 4K Ultra HD release on 2/27. Both will include the Blu-ray versions will the previous special features. The only extra on the 4K discs will be the legacy audio commentaries. Meanwhile, audio will be 5.1 DTS-HD MA on the 4K discs, presumably with video enhanced with HDR10. [Read on here…]

We do have one bit of actual home video news for you today...

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has just set director Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-nominated film The Shape of Water for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 3/13, with the Digital/Movies Anywhere release expected on 2/27.

This is just a quick heads-up to all of you Blu-ray and 4K fans out there…

Retail sources are now reporting an 8/15 street date for Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD. This, of course, also means that Scott’s Prometheus is due on 4K Ultra HD from Fox on that same day. Indeed, both titles are now available for pre-order on Amazon.com now. We’re waiting on final cover artwork and the official studio announcement, but 8/15 does appear to be the official street date.

First things first today: Our own Jim Hemphill has just posted a new Blu-ray review, this time featuring a look at Alexander Singer’s 1971 western Captain Apache, now available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.

In announcement news today, Universal has set Cary Grant: The Vault Collection for DVD only release on 4/19. Here’s a bit about the collection from the studio’s press site: “Featuring 18 films released between 1932 and 1936, the collection showcases the actor as he perfects his comedic timing and stretches his dramatic skills in a variety of roles alongside such Hollywood legends as Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, Sylvia Sidney, Charles Laughton, Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott and Fredric March. Including his feature film debut, This is the Night, as well as several Pre-Code dramas and comedies plus 5 films never before available to own…” We’ll post the complete list of films as soon as the studio provides it.  [Read on here…]

This is just a quick update to let you all know about something interesting that many of you guys are going to want to check out. You remember that HD remastering of The X-Files we told you was happening over two years ago now? There’s still no word of a proper Blu-ray release of the series yet, though we certainly know many of you want one. BUT… Netflix has just begun to stream the series in HD. So at the very least, many of you can finally see it and get a better sense of the HD quality and what the early episodes look like in widescreen. Do give it a look.

This is a quick note to let you know that I’ve just posted my in-depth review of Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, newly released on Blu-ray 3D Deluxe Edition by 20th Century Fox. It’s not a particularly good film, unfortunately, but the Blu-ray special edition experience at least is outstanding.
