HALO: Season 2, Se7en 4K release delayed to 2025, the challenges of film preservation in the digital age & more
We’ve got one more new disc review for you all to enjoy today, which is Stephen’s look at Simon Wincer’s Quigley Down Under (1990) in 4K Ultra HD from Shout! Studios—a new Shout Select title.
We’ve also updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits, and we’ve posted a big update of the Release Dates & Cover Art section (click on Cover Art in the navigation bar at the top of the page) with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. Don’t forget, any time you order literally anything from Amazon after clicking to them through one of our links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we really appreciate it.
And I just posted an interesting column over on our Patreon page that details some of the extraordinary changes currently underway behind-the-scenes within the home video industry—changes that begin with Disney making a deal for Sony to take over their physical media production but definitely don’t end there. I think you’ll find it interesting—and don’t forget that joining our Patreon is also a great way to help support our work here at the site. [Read on here...]

Pennebaker’s Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1979) in a new 2CD + Blu-ray package in the UK on 8/11 in honor of the film’s 50th anniversary! The package will include the remastered soundtrack album, as well as the acclaimed concert film itself newly restored in 4K from the original negatives. Note that while this is a UK release, the Blu-ray is coded for all regions and will include both 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and the original stereo in PCM format. Both the film and soundtrack have also been restored to completion for the first time, and now include The Jean Genie/Love Me Do medley and Round and Round featuring Jeff Beck.

We have two more new disc reviews for you today...
Tim has taken a look at Criterion’s recent Blu-ray release of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s The Tales of Hoffman (1951).
And Dennis has checked in with a look at Delbert Mann’s Marty (1955) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
In announcement news today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just revealed that they’re going to be re-releasing Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers as a new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook edition on 11/1, complete with a new feature: The Starship Troopers 25th Anniversary Reunion, a “virtual” reunion featuring screenwriter Ed Neumeier and actors Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Clancy Brown, Michael Ironside, Jake Busey, Patrick Muldoon, and Seth Gilliam.

We’ve got some good news today for those of you who are fans of The Beatles. But first one more new disc review...
Plus, the set includes a remarkable batch of extras, including many new audio commentary tracks, alternate audio tracks (full or partial audience laugh tracks), and a featurette on the process of saving the negatives and restoring the image and sound. Do give it a look.

Sony sets their Columbia Classics 4K Collection: Volume 2 for Ultra HD release on 9/14, plus Studio Canal’s Ran 4K & more
We’ve got some bit 4K release news for you today, but first more new disc reviews...
Stephen has posted his thoughts on Rod Lurie’s The Outpost: Extended Director’s Cut in 4K Ultra HD from Screen Media. Sounds like it’s a good film, but be aware that this is one of those rare 4K releases that doesn’t include HDR.
Also today, Dennis has reviewed Gus Trikonis’ Take The Job and Shove It (1981) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
More reviews are on the way for later this week. (And yes, I’m still waiting on Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 4K, but I will review that the moment it arrives.) [Read on here...]

Arrow’s January slate includes Oldboy 4K (in the UK), plus Mill Creek’s Jan, Abbott and Costello Kickstarter & more
We have a little bit more interesting release news for you to check out today (by way of closing out the week)...
First of all, our friends at Arrow Video have just announced their January 2021 slate of home video titles, and it’s pretty terrific. It starts with UK only Blu-ray releases of Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s [Rec] and Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy. Oldboy will also be released on 4K Ultra HD (in the UK only), but remember that 4K discs are not region locked.
Next up, Arrow is releasing Park Chan-wook’s JSA: Joint Security Area and Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales on Blu-ray Disc in the UK, US, and Canada.
Finally, those of you who missed out of Arrow’s recent (and fast selling) Gamera box set (reviewed here on The Bits) will be pleased to know that its films are being reissued on Blu-ray (again in the UK, US, and Canada) in a more wide-release configuration. Three SKUs will be available: Gamera: The Heisei Era (3 films plus a documentary and the Gamera the Brave film as a bonus) as both a wide-release box set and as a Steelbook, and Gamera: The Showa Era (8 films) as a wide-release box set. Obviously, you won’t get all the swag their original big box included, but at least this gives more of you access to the films in HD. [Read on here...]

The Expanse: Season 4, Bill & Ted Face the Music, Robert the Bruce 4K in Germany, and more
We’re closing out the week today with a little bit more release news and some new disc reviews. Let’s get to the reviews first...
Tim and Dennis have been busy these last couple days; Tim has posted a new review of David Cronenberg’s Shivers (1975), newly-released on Blu-ray as part of Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series.
Also, Dennis has turned in his thoughts on John Badam’s The Hard Way (1991) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, along with David Roby’s Most Wanted (2020) from Paramount, and Pierre Jourdan’s I Am a Dancer on Blu-ray from Film Movement and StudioCanal.
I’ve also begun working on a pair of new 4K Ultra HD releases, which I expect to have up over the next few days, so be sure to watch for these. [Read on here...]
