We’re kicking off a new week with a pair of 4K Ultra HD reviews from Sony’s terrific new Columbia Classics 4K Collection: Volume 1 box set, which streets on June 16th. Now available for your reading pleasure are my thoughts on Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove (1964) and David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Both look and sound better than ever. Before you ask, these films are ONLY available in this box set for now, and it does not appear that Sony has any plans to release them individually this year (though it’s certainly possible that could change later in 2020 or 2021).

Also up here at The Bits today is a review of Dorothy Arzner’s Dance, Girl, Dance (1940) on Blu-ray from Criterion by Dennis, and my own look at Kino Lorber’s animated The Inspector (1965-69) on Blu-ray—part of a larger series of reviews on the DePatie-Freleng Collection I hope to post over the coming weeks.

In other news today, Arrow Films has announced a UK only release of David Fincher’s The Game for Blu-ray on July 24th (SRP £44.99). It’s limited to 3K units and will include a 200-page hardback book. On this side of the Pond, Universal controls the title, so we’ll have to wait and see if Arrow Video has licensed it for release here in the States at some point. [Read on here...]

We’ve got three more new reviews for you today from Tim, each well worth your time, including his thoughts on Shout! and Scream Factory’s A Quiet Place in the Country and Umbrella Entertainment’s region-free Silver Bullet on Blu-ray, as well as Shout!’s Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume VIII box set on DVD. All right, we’ve got a bunch of interesting release news today here at The Bits…

The big news today is that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has just set Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Rise of the Planet of the Apes for 4K Ultra HD release on 6/13 (SRP $39.99 each). There’s no word yet on extras, but presumably they’ll include the previous Blu-ray editions with all of those extras. This certainly confirms what we already knew, which is that War for the Planet of the Apes is going to be released on the format as well later this year.

Also on the 4K front today, Universal has just set Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 for release on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format on 6/6 (SRP $39.98 each). As you may remember, we first revealed that these titles were coming to the format back on 2/14 (you can see that post here). [Read on here…]

All right, I’ve been busy working on Blu-ray reviews for you these last couple days, and we have four to share with you now. Late yesterday I posted my thoughts on Magnolia’s The Wave (aka Bølgen), which is a nifty little Norwegian disaster film from last year, as well as Madman Entertainment’s excellent North Sea Hijack (1979), better known to Americans as ffolkes! The film stars Roger Moore and it’s a great little gem. Best of all, though the packaging says Region B, the disc is actually an All Region release. Then today, our own Jim Hemphill has turned in his thoughts on Twilight Time’s new double feature of the Frank Sinatra films Tony Rome (1967) and Lady in Cement (1968). Finally, I’ve just completed my thoughts on CBS and Paramount’s whopping new 30-disc Star Trek: 50th Anniversary TV and Movie Collection Blu-ray box set, which as many of you know includes the first-ever release of Star Trek: The Animated Series on Blu-ray. That title will also be released separately on Blu-ray later this year, but in the meantime do check out our thoughts on the box set.  [Read on here…]
