Review

Just as people began (once again) to dismiss 3D as a fad, we’re treated to a film that reminds us what the theatrical 3D can be at its finest. Gravity in IMAX 3D is a stunning experience, putting you in smack in the middle of outer space with actors Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and using new VFX technology to immerse you in a film that’s more experience than narrative.

On Blu-ray 3D in your home theater, Gravity’s biggest vistas aren’t quite the same grand experience just for lack of sheer screen size. But once the movie gets more personal, and the space between objects  is measured in inches and feet instead of miles, all the magic returns. The creation of depth is really something special. Bullock’s journey through the International Space Station, for example, is simply breathtaking. Even the handles and the switches in the film’s cramped space capsules pop out in sharp relief. Like its 2D Blu-ray counterpart (reviewed at The Bits here), Gravity 3D delivers a razor crisp image, with no evidence of artifacting, ringing or crosstalk to pull you out of the film.

Gravity 3D is now the Saturn V of IMAX (and Blu-ray) stereoscopy, and it’s definitely cleared the tower. This disc should – and likely will – take Avatar’s place in terms of sheer home theater demo material. Hopefully, it won’t take another four years to be so impressed by a 3D experience.
