Dark Coast Pictures, in association with WheelHouse and Universal, has produced a one-hour documentary about the making of the series called Knight Rider: Behind the Wheel. It includes never before seen photos and footage, and was painstakingly researched by the production team. Two companion pieces have also been produced that are coming separately this fall—Picture Car and Cut to the Chase—each a 6-part docuseries.
Also today, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has set Peter Berg’s The Rundown (2003) for 4K Ultra HD release on 8/26.
Blue Underground will release Gary Sherman’s Raw Meat (aka Death Line) (1972) on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray, remastered Blu-ray, and DVD on 9/30.
And per Variety today, Sony is bringing Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy—including Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Spider-Man 3 (2007)—back to theaters in 4K DCP in September. But here’s kicker: Spider-Man 2 will actually be the Spider-Man 2.1 Extended Version that’s previously only been available in HD on Blu-ray. At the moment however, our studio sources tell us there’s no immediate plan to bring Spider-Man 2.1 to physical 4K UHD (thought that could change—we’ll let you know if it does).
Speaking of theatrical screenings, it’s also been revealed that Shout! Studios is holding a Hong Kong Cinema Classics theatrical retrospective screening series in Los Angeles (on 8/2 for Beyond Fest at the American Cinematheque) and New York (on 8/2 at the IFC Center). Included in the series will be City on Fire, Hard Boiled, The Killer, Bullet in the Head, A Better Tomorrow I-III, Peking Opera Blues, and A Chinese Ghost Story, all in 4K DCP. What’s more, filmmaker John Woo himself will be in attendance for a Q&A after the Beyond Fest screenings of Hard Boiled and The Killer at the Egyptian on 8/2 and 8/3 respectively! Be sure to visit the American Cinematheque and IFC Center websites for the details and tickets. All of those are coming to 4K disc from Shout! in the months ahead.
Not done yet! For you fans of director Akira Kurosawa, the American Cinematheque is also screening Toho’s new 4K restorations of The Hidden Fortress, Stray Dog, Throne of Blood, Rashomon, Red Beard, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Seven Samurai, High and Low, and Ikiru throughout the months of August and September. Click here for details on that. About half of those are already available (or announced for release) on 4K disc from Criterion and the BFI. Fingers crossed, between those two companies, we’ll get the rest on 4K disc the coming months as well.
Finally today, it’s been announced that filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is going to be directing the next James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios, presumably after he finished Dune Messiah (which is set to hit theaters in 2026). And just like that, my interested in new Bond has gone up dramatically! You can read more here and here.
That’s all for now. Stay tuned...
